For a while Ive been really keen on the idea of an anime club style group watch of the great movie KNOCK OFF (dir. hark tsui, 1998). Its probably better than DOUBLE TEAM, even though it doesnt have dennis rodman in it, but thats ok, lets watch double team eventually too.
One of my friends described jcvd in this as fighting off a teeth-grinding coke rictus. Apparently he was so coked up during shooting he actually doesnt remember anything, and you can tell. It has a badass action setpiece where jcvd slides around on his knees shooting dudes, and I like that it has a sparks theme song. Its basically live action anime and it’s also kind of gorgeous.
Were doing a double feature with the takashi miike film RAINY DOG, personally hand selected by my pal @Tulpa. I havent seen it but I trust their taste, and so should you!
Rainy Dog is not Miike in the stereotyped mode of cartoonish ultra-violence, it’s melancholic Miike. This is a movie I want to show to justify why I care about Miike in the first place. Its aesthetic, its reserved, and its completely captivating. There’s hardly any dialogue for the entire running time. Saying this is enough to get Shrug to sign in. If people want more over the top Miike fare, they’ll have to wait for the next violence club where I’ll play something tasteless and hilarious like Happiness of the Katakuris. But for the first? Rainy Dog.
Aww, Rainy Dog. I love that movie. @Tulpa have you seen The Bird People in China? It’s another Miike with a similar atmosphere; I remember enjoying it immensely. https://youtu.be/gsquzbsFq14
