videogame things you think about a lot

all cutscenes in clock tower 3 are noteworthy because of how good they are, but this one from the very beginning always caught my attention.

the way the bed has physics integrated to it and how the sheets move (!), the really frantic piano solo out of nowhere, the character animation and camera work. wonderful

That cutscene is oozing a vibe of “we just got access to mocap for the first time and it’s the coolest thing ever”.

The enthusiastic, relatively purist focus on what you can do with the new technology reminds me of Mario 64 or Quake 1’s joy in exploring true 3d environments

EDIT:

Yeah! Everybody wanted to get involved in that mocap freshness

How many voiceover artists could/should get paid to do the voiceover on Let’s Plays if the creator is going to insist on having a voiceover and has an annoying voice

I remember thinking that the cloud blocks in Super Mario Bros were teeth, I thought you were stealing coins from the tooth fairy or something. I had to have somehow not seen Lakitu yet, which is partly why I still think about it.

I often think about how the ball buster in God Hand doesn’t affect female enemies. One of the weird explanations my brain has proffered is that the move only hits at a certain range relative to the base of a person’s pelvis. So although it would be extremely painful to be kicked in any external genitalia, female enemy genitalia (on average) doesn’t extend far enough away from the body to be hit by the move. But then actual genitalia (of any person) can drastically differ in how far it extends from the body. This leads me to the conclusion that God Hand imperfectly simulates genitalia.

I guess an alternative explanation is that a necessary prerequisite of the move is that it makes contact with a ‘ball’ or ‘balls’. So even if it physically hits an opponent, it has no effect unless it contacts a gonad.

An anagram of ‘God Hand’ is ‘Gonad HD’.

I can’t stand when people sit there and read every line of goddamn dialogue, and even worse is when they decide to do voices. It’s like, great, we’re gonna be here for 200 hours because you insist on reading everything in a dumb fucking voice. I generally bail on those unless I can convince (if it’s a stream) the streamer to do Cloud as Jimmy Stewart or something.

I will say the edge case scenario I’ve found in which youtubers reading everything out loud is a good thing is japanese jikkyou players who read text aloud in text-dense games, it has been helpful for me both learning how to pronounce kanji and learning to recognize the kanji for words I know by sound but not by sight
