iirc, in early stuff, there are animals too. but i don’t think that’s still the case.
but individual species of pokemon are still often described through their similarities to specific animals.
there’s a book in the library in diamond/pearl that mentions people eating pokemon
I think they took a lot of steps to remove animals proper from the world and have Pokemon act as the analogue. I think it’s interesting that they don’t do this for plants. Regular flora are everywhere despite the coexistence of grass pokemon.

Also according to Shudō, real animals went extinct in the Pokémon world years ago and no longer exist. He claimed that instances of real-world animals appearing in earlier episodes of Pokémon the Series were due to the animation staff not paying enough attention.
