i love the old boy twist because you can see it coming from a mile away, and yet, around the middle i went “no, surely its just my brain in the gutter”, but no i really was correct the first time

The finest twists are often like this. I experienced a similar arc of wrongly abandoning my initial twist prediction when I read Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None.
And really it goes back to the world’s first recorded twist, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex (even the “brain in the gutter” part)
