The X-Files episode D.P.O. shows Virtua Fighter 2 pretty prominently. You also hear a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog!? in that arcade.

Pretty sure that first scene is from The Wizard.
It has been decades since I’ve watched it, you could be right. In my hazy memory I could have sworn it was a complete non sequitur
It’s a TV show (and not even the kind that is “basically a movie”), but in an episode of NewsRadio, a Stargate Defender arcade cabinet is installed in the foyer outside the station office. Dave is initially hostile to it, but it’s later revealed that Dave fucked up his SATs in high school because he got addicted to the game. And the cabinet comes in just around the time (that is, in the same episode) his girlfriend Lisa decides they should retake the SATs together. Of course, he loses control of his life again and stays up the entire night before the test playing the game.
I didn’t realize it at the time I was watching it 20+ years ago, but that’s a Stargate (sequel to Defender) cabinet that’s been clearly repurposed for the barely fictional Stargate Defender, presumably to avoid legal issues. Game designer Eugene Jarvis does show up in a cameo though.
