I’ve still played no 2019 games this year, but I’ve played four 2018 games so far. I think that should count for playing like… 2 or so 2019 games, maybe 1 & 1/2.
Those games were RDR 2, God of War, Wario Ware Gold and Iconoclasts. They weren’t bad!

I GET WHY SHE LOVED IT SO MUCH
I played a good chunk of 2 a couple of years ago and indeed, its got all the stuff you love about the 90’s JRPGS which you love. And I really mean that. It was a very nostalgic and just plain enjoyable game.
potch is the best name for currency, ive started calling all money potch
Enjoy how I spent my afternoon. Will update it has frothing demand or actual release dates happen. Half this list is question marks.
I am gonna have an actual goddamn top twenty this year and I don’t feel like the time on this hobby was badly spent or anything

Almost exactly my list so far. Caveat is that I have a love/hate relationship with Baba is You – to me, it was remarkably punishing. What others complain is their experience with Sekiro, I felt while getting beaten down by those relentlessly innovative puzzles.
Also I’d add Bloodstained as a fifth entry on my list. It falls in the category of comfort food rather than a formally innovative game like the others, but I need that too.
honestly baba and outer wilds are both like all time top 20 for me and if I can count krz and noita as this year I’d fully expect them to be as good as well
plus there have been so many other solid A’s this year. it might be the best year? I think 2015 is its closest competition
the discourse and the market have never been more fucked up but the medium is turning out all time greats
thank you for being sb, sb
Classically behind the times as ever I think the highlights of the year for me have been Hollow Knight and Slay the Spire. I have a lot of trouble remembering what I played earlier this year and what was last year.
Far Cry Primal was mostly exactly what I expected but the writing was better than I thought it would be as were some of the setpieces. Mainly what sticks with me is the voice acting, props to the cast for selling fictitious proto-european languages so well.
2019 has been good and this month there’s more monster hunter and more dragon quest which for me means it also contains all of 2018 so
not massively enthused about this year??? i guess sekiro was great and i’m still frothin’ for saga scarlet grace in english and pc halo
guess i should play this outer wilds thing
yeah the game I would most like to shill for this year is probably Astrologaster because the writing is such a joy and I barely found out about it but Outer Wilds is totally sublime in a way that is very very hard to do for an adult audience.
but also we got what I would say with some confidence are The Best flight semi sim and The Best total war grand strategy thing and The Best modern accessible 2D fighting game and The Best non sleazy otome srpg and The Best pair of action games capcom has put out in ages and it’s all really a lot
Also, Factorio will belong here when they finally bring it out of early access. I realized recently that it’s one of the notable games of this decade. Like it’s not just – as I initially assumed – that I personally enjoy it because I like to nerd out, it’s a remarkable work that pushes the medium forward.
September update: I have yet to play any 2019 releases other than the demo for Supraland, but I may have played ten 2018 releases at this point so I could theoretically do a top ten for that year soon.
Oh yeah I played the Resident Evil 2 demo, it seemed alright but I was already running out of ammo by the end of it so that seemed like a big flashing “not for me!” sign.
I’m calling it. I don’t think anything else is coming out this year that’s gonna bump anything off the list. Not even Shenmue 3 or Wattam!!!
My honourable mentions are my midyear list above as well as Horace and Superliminal.
