I don’t know, from what I saw it seemed way better than lost even though I only watched up to the first episode of the 2nd season which is also when it seemed like it was about to get a lot more interesting since it wasn’t mostly based on a book that was probably just ok anymore. I keep meaning to get back to it
I worked with a video guy at my last job with whom I agreed on basically everything. He though The Leftovers was one of the best shows ever made.
I am suuuuuuuuuuper super skeptical of that idea considering everything Damon Lindelof makes is a mystery box with nothing inside of it. Like, we got led on this wild goose chase in Lost for 8 season and there was nothing at the end. Similarly, he co-wrote Prometheus, that looked fascinating but was another wild goose chase with nothing at the end. Similarly, he co-wrote Star Trek: Into Darkness, which started out seeming interesting but then became wild goose chase with nothing at the end. Seems like he’s made a career out of intrigue for intrigue’s sake, just piling on new questions and mysteries without ever developing them.
With The Leftovers, he made it known at the start, at least, that there would never be answers, and thus, the show is about characters who need an answer but there’s none to be had. So, that’s an improvement at least.
I dunno. I saw one episode about a convention, late in the show, and I really enjoyed it as an isolated hour of TV. If the rest of the show is like that, it might actually be good.
I watched all of The Leftovers.
It has really excellent production values. Looks and feels like a top tier show. Its frequently intriguing.
But its often really depressive, with people doing awful things to eachother with no real explanation or jusitification for why. There was very little for me to get behind and I eventually realized that I also shouldn’t wait/expect anything to eventually come out of the horrible imagery and actions on screen.
I really do not understand the seemingly universal opinion that season 2 is somehow dramatically better than season 1. Its exactly the same quality and actually makes some changes so that it doesn’t have to finish certain things from season 1. Season 2 is kind of a re-boot within the same show.
I remained frustrated with the show for nearly its entire run time.
It does have a decent finish, though. The show never makes any of itself feel ‘right’ and many questions are unanswered. But, I did feel satisfied, with the end.
And I fell in love with Carrie Coon. I watch everything she’s in, now.
who says refn doesn’t have a sense of humor
watching the boys made me realize the horrible truth of the universe is that Mark Millar is better at this than Garth Ennis
that breaking bad movie they sorta filmed in secret is coming out in a couple months
gotta admit it’s a little sad to know that Norm McDonald’s take on the BB finale is officially Not Canon
I am more open to this than I expected on account of thinking of all the Breaking Bad characters that aren’t Saul (who didn’t need expansion, but is being served marvelously by it), Jesse Pinkman seems to have the most left to say about.
Wary of an expanding Breaking Bad cinematic universe nonetheless.
Also, I don’t really want to see Jesse put through any more hell.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, is out on Netflix. (its a Netflix show).
I have watched 3 episodes so far and Its pretty much right on the money. I am very happy that this was made.
They don’t make stuff like this. Even when the first movie came out. All puppets, all hand-made sets. This is a rare experience.
It perhaps trades for the viewer, a bit of the mystery and novelty of the movie; in order to present a fully fleshed out world. However, that’s sort of canon. In the movie, the world is all but dead. So, everything you see is canonically a surprise or a rarity. Excuses aside, they have done a solid job of giving us a world which is worth the trade.
And just like the movie, the tone can waver a bit. It can at times, feel a touch childish. But just like the movie, it also has a fair helping of real dark stuff. And is otherwise mostly right in the middle.
The CG is well integrated and seems to be used sparingly. There have only been a couple of scenes where the CG elements pulled me out for a sec.

Tried the first ep, did seem reassuringly expensive
But I just hate prequels
They really flex with the amount of liquids and other wet stuff they have going on these puppets.
Ok I finally saw a CG scene which is way out of line.
But right after that, they did something pretty cool.
i’m consistently surprised at how expressive these puppets are? i have no idea how any of this stuff works but the detail in the gelflings’ faces in particular seems like soooo much work lol
I think my tiny noisy niece is going to love this shit
the underground girl stuff + Sigourney Weaver narration = avatar vibe
I had to work to get past the knowledge it’s a prequel and the “age of resistance” subtitle but it helps that I have zero memory of the original and I’m glad so many puppeteers are getting work.
I really liked that they had the scene with the cages rattling so early in the first episode, I forgot how strongly I associate that with this era of puppetry
If you’re thirsting for more puppetry afterward, I’d recommend going through Farscape.
i think it would be better in a gibberish language with just like really vague subtitles like watch a dub with youtube autotranslated captions but keep def keep the tricky scheming bad bird’s hmmmm noises intact
