i’ve just been watching every episode of ‘seconds from disaster’ because watching horrible tragedies makes my own life seem less bad i guess?

they’re all on youtube in 240p on a channel called “mega disasters”

was the dick debt incurred by game of thrones re[packaged] by a [private] equity [firm] and [loaded] onto smaller shows?

i don’t understand why they’re so hung up about it

Anyone watch that new Nicolas Winding Refn show on Amazon yet?

Yeah I watched two episodes last night. the first one felt like sitting in a room with someone with cocaine nose and we were staring at each other impassively for 3 weeks straight. the second one felt like sitting in a room with an old man who keeps drifting off to sleep for a few minutes and we were staring at each other for 3 weeks

third episode is like a crystal healing lady has invited me over because she’s deeply troubled by my aura and we’re sitting there forever not saying anything and I’m trying to avoid eye contact as much as possible without being rude

it’s picking up now

Caught up with Westworld. Overall eh? It’s a lot of work with not quite enough stretches of purpose-driven story.

I’ve completely lost track of what it means to get shot in that show, whether you be bot or meatbag. Everyone seems to be able to recover from anything, except when the plot is done with you, in which case, you will instantly be permanently dead.

They gotta stop ending every scene with somebody getting shot at the end of an exchange. It feels so pointless now.

That said, I liked the one from the POV of the Ghost Nation guy.

How do you feel about the shift of direction/climate it stepped into for S3?

I agree that S2 definitely treads water (…accidental pun). The last parts really sealed the deal for me as fitting, and far as I can remember logical with most remaining plot threads. Like they couldn’t match the mostly graceful strides of S1 but managed to deliver a meaningful extension.

Not sure I’ll be rewatching it again (like I did with S1 which just felt so well sculpted 90% of the time).

I wish there was a cop show just about the homicide cops in #totdy

yo whaaaat is this??

refn’s new show, too old to die young. there’s only a couple of those cop scenes in it. but there’s a part where the main cop guy makes a call to his office to find out something for his gangster friend and he puts it on speaker so he can hear, and the gangster guys reaction afterwards had me laughing harder than I’ve laughed at anything in a while.

I was unsure about the show before it came out because miles teller was the main character and it seemed like they were making him out to be some driver in drive type character, but miles teller is a dirty boy if there ever was one. but it turns out it was a fake out anyway. driver was a getaway driver and had an unconsummated romance with his neighbor and caved in mobsters heads, miles teller’s martin is a cop in a relationship with a 17 year old who he met when she was 16 and was attracted to her cause she was crying at a crime scene, even when he’s killing pedophiles it feels like watching some serial killer movie, goslings character in only god forgives came across as more of a human being than this guy, so actually miles teller was perfect for the role.

the actual avenger who appears out of nowhere from the desert and has a cool jacket and exists to kill evil (specifically men enslaving women) is this lady

it’s very slow. everyone takes about 10 seconds to respond to anything anyone says. I thought there wasn’t a single second wasted in twin peaks season 3 but my patience was being tested on this thing.

I’m of two minds about it:

  1. I’m glad they’re going all the way with the premise of this show, and embracing the worldwide implications of the Hosts becoming fully sentient. I am a sucker for any depiction of an AI’s awakening that doesn’t skip directly to the Terminator genocide - Matrix’s The Second Renaissance did this wonderfully and horrifically, Her did it in a much more humanistic and optimistic way. I’m excited to see what the outside world of humans is like, and how Hosts will try to muddle through it.

All that said:

  1. This show is tonally just an absolute drag, and endless trudge toward death and nihilism. It wasn’t completely like this in season 1, where they had reprieves into the Western fantasy world to mix it up a bit and inject some life. The idea of leaving all of that behind and making the show exclusively about human-hating robots being loosed into a cyberpunk dystopia is guaranteed to be dull, dreary, bleak, and overwhelmingly depressing. We’ll doubtless see Hosts endlessly appalled by humanity and their current state, which like, do I want an entire show about that? Ugh.

Because they’ve committed to their concept, they’ve ditched the fantasy of wild-west adventure and prairie life, and are now fully headlong into bleak dystopia. As a story that all makes sense. As a show? I really am not interested in watching something that dreary and bleak for another full season.

I dunno. This show was able to sometimes distract you from the depressing tone by throwing in some action scenes with the private military guys, so I guess they might do that again. I don’t really want action, though, I want high-concept sci-fi delivered as far away from darkened office labs as possible.

Is there beautiful shocking violence at any point, or is it too slow for all that?

there’s plenty of that

i’ve been putting this off a bit but i’m really hype

are the episodes actually like 90 minutes or whatever?

nine episodes between an hour and ten and a hour and half and then the last episode is a half hour. the first two are pretty slow. I can see why out of the whole thing he picked 4 and 5 to show off at cannes.
