TV Party (Part 1)

what we do in the shadows still has fun special effects and some good gags and performances but this whole season felt like them tossing a dozen very interesting ideas in the trash can one by one. the treatment of marwa over the course of the season is maybe the most plainly baffling things they have ever done

right? huge, huge step down, kind of baffled by it

everyone’s character arcs just spun in circles and sped into a brick wall. extremely emotionally unsatisfying

im not sure what made me remember it, but i did and have now spent all evening thinking about this fever dream:

the peak of british television

Very grateful for this info so I can be satisfied with my decision to drop this after the first season

Finding out Nathan Fielder is a big Derren Brown fan made a lot of sense

yeah. this flashed into my head while i was in the cinema (there’s a weekend at bernies type joke in peking opera blues), and i wasn’t able to check if my memory was correct and this really existed. so that next 30 minutes had me thinking about it alongside the rehearsal.

i think derren brown sucks, but this one really just hits a certain weirdness while he is very very serious about it. the only time i saw it was the day after it aired on a comedown with friends and it was such a wonderful experience.

For All Mankind’s third season ended in a really overstuffed, rushed finale.

There were things about it I really liked, but a lot of it - most of it - fell really flat. This season more than any has seen For All Mankind go from being a pretty gripping alt-history sci-fi show to being a dime-a-dozen NBC soap. People just do dumb shit for drama, constantly. It’s absurd to imagine these are the best of the best, the highest professionals in the field.

Thoughts (Spoilers)
  • The North Korean astronaut being the first man to land on Mars is a great idea. I wish they’d introduced this much earlier in the season, so they didn’t have to squeeze it into one quarter of the final ep. It also is predictably “the evil North Koreans sent these two men to their certain deaths, and the story of the NK astronaut is him losing hope and deciding to commit suicide, before he is saved last-minute by the Americans, who have their shit together.”

  • Doing the Oklahoma City bombing at NASA was actually a great idea, as was the radicalization of Jimmy. It was kind of tedious to go through in real time, and it should’ve gone farther, but it was affecting.

  • All the shit with Danny was just soap-opera-level drama, man that took me completely out of this show. Like, man vs environment wasn’t enough on the arid surface of Mars? You had to add in a villain? I dunno, I guess it’s better than nothing.

  • The show gained something of a spine on the Presidential LGBT-rights storyline here at the end, so I’d say it was overall worth it.

  • Did not realize how little of a shit I gave against whitebread nothing-character Karen until the moment she ate it in the bombing.

  • Weird how little the Russian’s being present actually mattered this season.

  • If next season goes for like Titan or Jupiter or something, that might get my interest back up. Having them be on an actual planet with an atmosphere sucked ass.

yeah, it’s not a good one.
but it ended somewhere (or maybe got bad enough) that left me actually feeling pretty positive about it going forward.

I binged all of True Detective season 1 last night. I liked it a lot. Not sure I want to watch the other two seasons. They sound like a major step down.

nooooo not true… s2 is unironically even better than s1. s3 sucks tho specifically bc it tries so hard to be a redo of s1. s2 is just not very similar to s1 which is why people didnt like it imo. if it had been its own thing or it didnt have an impossible level of hype i think it would have been better received. if nothing else it’s like 8 hours of colin farrell doing the miami vice vaguely unpeaceable cowboy accent.

learned today that the people who made american vandal made a new series that is on one of the ‘second tier’ streaming services. cool how there are now just huge swaths of mystery tv content that come and go without barely anyone knowing about their existence.

At the time, and especially in retrospect, it is an incredible interpretation of “True Detective Season 2”
