it’s true! I know why everyone is getting tired of him as an actor and director but his producing credits are more and more impeccable
I’m loving Our Flag Means Death. Such a nice looking show too. It gets extremely cute.
Oh this has gotta be about the Gun Trace Task Force
I still love the Wire but I don’t really trust Simon any more now that he’s been twitterbrained. I guess we’ll have to see.
I feel like in any other context I wouldn’t like Natasha Lyonne’s extremely affected character in Russian Doll, like if she was saying these lines with a sitcom rhythm or in a cop show or something i would hate them. But somehow the constant puttering, murmuring, go with the flowness work perfectly in a sort of disintegrating always off balance puzzle box world. Season 2 is even headier than season 1 and she is my ideal time travel character: half of bill and ted’s weird savant genius planning and chill vibes and half marty mcfly’s in a daze, too honest, and trying to fix your weird family. The weird feeling of this game designer character whose mind never turns off trying to hack the complex clockwork rules of reality is extremely satisfying to me. It feels so personal and small despite going for extremely, entertainingly big metaphysical ideas towards the end. I didn’t think it was necessary at all after season 1 had such a great ending but I could trust them with more if they wanted.
I tried watching the first episode and I literally want to kill everyone in it does that change? like everyone who wrote this is just so fucking self satisfied? it’s driving me crazy
also who says Lisa left eye Lopez in casual pre make out conversation YOU WOULDA JUST SAID LEFT EYE! YOU’RE NOT MTV NEWS
trying to find things I like, I like that Natasha lyonne trudges everywhere. I think I’ll just re-watch freeway 2
if you can’t take the level of up it’s own assness of episode 1 then yes you will definitely find it insufferable
yeah this show isn’t for me i think. it’s a bummer so many people I know love it I will continue pretending I haven’t seen it
this is criminal, thank you for the warning
I’ve been watching an episode of this show every few days lately and I think it’s well done. I like the modern music by the composer for Nicolas Winding Refn movies (I’ve only seen Drive) over the authentic-looking 1900 scenery. The gross surgery scenes are well done, too.
Even when the show gets a little heavy handed in its themes or puts characters in contrived situations to get where it wants to go it remains engaging and fun.
I’ve watched like 5 episodes out of 8 of this show about josh brolin’s hole and nothing has happened
yeah that mostly looked like a mess from the ads
What… is this?
Outer Range. it’s about cowboys and their voids they need filled
I’ve never been so absolutely sold
finally got around to watching reservation dogs and i gotta say i really liked it. it does the thing a lot of more recent shows do where like halfway through the season they realize the main character isn’t actually that interesting, so they instead devote entire episodes to each of the supporting cast. and, my big criticism of the show is they are basically right and should have just focused on any one of the other characters as the protagonist rather than the guy who is ostensibly the star. nothing against the actor, but the character is just… not particularly compelling as written.
it also has a ton of really interesting cameos/guest stars or whathaveyou. including (and i’m spoilering this because the surprise was really like pretty amazing to me) bill burr as a basketball coach/driving instructor. it is a very weird casting choice because he tries very hard to do like a vague southern accent, but you can hear bostonian in him just like jump out from time to time, especially (amusingly) when he is like yelling at people in traffic. anyway, other than questionable accent choices it’s a great performance, i like bill burr as an actor more than i do as a comedian lol.
anyway i found a lot of it surprisingly relatable despite being very far removed from the cultural context of the setting. anyone who grew up in a shitty town surrounded by weirdos will probably feel the same.
I liked this show a lot in the way that I liked Freaks and Geeks two decades earlier. Hyper-specific storytelling with absolutely the lowest stakes
it got better at the end, or maybe I just think that because the last episode keeps referencing no country for old men, but instead of anton chigur it’s imogen poots. should fill the Void in anyone’s life if they’re wanting a weirder Lost on a ranch in wyoming.
I watched all of Ash vs. Evil Dead over the last few days.
I wouldn’t say it’s…good, in any real way, but it was fun. It’s also really weird how a show that must have been pretty expensive, between the needle drops every episode, the special effects, and the thousands of gallons of karo syrup, manages to feel so…low rent?
It’s not really a bad thing. It definitely works for the show. It also doesn’t hurt that something like 90% of the cast were people who were in Xena and Hercules back when. The whole “filmed in New Zealand pretending to be Michigan” thing lends it a really weird feel that, again, manages to work for it.
A lot of episodes seem like they came up with a good gag and worked backwards from there. Like, someone sat down and said “what if a porno mag attacked Ash, and a cryo tech zombie shot sperm vials at him like shotgun blasts” and cooked up the plot after.
All of that comes together to give it a very…old TV show feel? I mean, I guess not that old, just not modern “prestige TV” tier.
And, I dunno, it’s just fun to see Bruce Campbell back as Ash.
Edit: Neglected to mention that Lucy Lawless just hams it up so goddamn hard in this show, it’s unreal.
Edit 2: Damn, forgot to mention Lee Majors as Ash’s shitty dad. And Ted Raimi. And the actress who played Ash’s sister back in the original movie. Pretty much all of the actors are having a good time in this goofy show.
