TV Party (Part 1)

the reason that artificial flavor of love tastes different from the real flavor of love is because the original species died out in the 50’s due to a fungus, but that’s what the artificial flavor is based on

new alan partridge day

the only religious holiday I celebrate

watching the girlfriend experience season 3 and this season’s escort is a neuroscientist who works for a british tech firm and secretly records her clients to use as data for a machine learning algorithm to create more realistic AIs to talk to which is a kind of wild premise for a tv show. it feels almost like alex garland-y like ex machina or devs or like it could take place inside of one of those worlds. it definitely takes place in like the slightest near future because the VR is too good. it’s got a lot of interesting ingredients for a show i would like but the main actress isn’t great!

Is the Watchmen tv series really about cops being on the opposite side of white supremacists?? Or is that just like, a red herring

it’s a red herring

it’s good, the Tulsa setting is a lot smarter than it appears to people who don’t know the history of the region too well (I didn’t). Likewise the Vietnam backstory comes across as weirdly anachronistic if you haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about and reading the original Watchmen.

I also liked the Ozymandias subplot a ton even though it had relatively little bearing on its thematic goals until the end. They told exactly the story they wanted to, in probably the most fertile context for making it about race in America that they were ever going to get. It’s really quite something. But it’s so confident and deliberate that it can be alienating at first if you have only a vague expectation of a watchmen series, for sure.

I do think a lot of their thematic decisions, especially early on, seem almost pointlessly provocative without the context of the original, which given the way that a show like that is going to be received in the context of prestige TV was interesting. an admirable use of HBO money that risks not seeming like it? idk

I also vaguely remembered the marketing of the show being hesitant to call itself watchmen 2, whether because that seemed arrogant when making a sequel in another medium, or because it would call to mind the only pretty good movie, or because it would somehow shrink the audience who wasn’t familiar with the original, but it’s absolutely watchmen 2, and a good one at that.

does the watchmen tv show take the comic book squid attack ending as canon or the movie one?

I cannot stress enough how much I loathe that show but I have contained my rantings into this thread and will speak of it no further beyond its walls:

Oh I missed this thread, nice. I might watch it and read the thread as I go haha

a lot of the negative readings of this show came down to people being understandably impatient with the way it set up the first couple episodes I thought, it appeared to be a kind of edgy that was seemingly for no one

I think it started with one idea of what the show would be, which is covered in the pilot, and then it gives way to two, maybe three, other shows, none of which resolve or meaningfully interact with each other.

Bunch of interesting ideas, no real follow-through. Very Lindelof.

I remember reading an interview after the show wrapped up where they talked about how the direction of the show changed after they filmed the pilot. So most of those characters and concepts that are set up in that pilot are pretty quickly put to the side as it goes on. It’s strange.

I enjoyed it

Yeah I bailed after the second episode so that sounds plausible.

i like Watchmen HBO but imo it does often say a whole lot of nothing and sometimes slips into harrowing for the sake of harrowing. a lot of “hey, look at this” with no specific take away of what it means in the larger context of anything. it does say some things, though, and i think certain episodes are really well done, but kind of undercooked

I was all ready to disregard it and it was pretty enjoyable, good performances, big ol’ bucket of symbolism

I don’t enjoy hating prestige TV as much as I enjoy hating other stuff now that it’s so well established as a target, I’m strictly a counter-counter-reactionary
