Touhou thread

It absolutely astounds me how many good looking Touhou fan games there are but we will never know about, but could totally just be solid original indie games if you just removed Touhou.

Are Japanese fans actually tracking/documenting all these releases better than the foreign fandom, or are threads about convention loot hauls still the most authorative sources?

I’m utterly amazed we are living in an age where we get trailers for Touhou spin-off games in English!

I’ve never played SNR but this looks pretty good.
Where can one acquire it?

Some of the better sources just kin dof gave up a few years ago. There’s blogs that cover them on an event by event basis, but the wikis have been unmaintained for years.

Pretty sure we’ve got the most authoritative lists here in the US, and they’re incomplete.

(wrt english releases, wake me when they release the windows versions of the games rather than just console ports, grumble grumble)

well didn’t it run on Type-X in the arcades and that got cracked and released to the internet like 5 years ago?

Alternately for like 5 dollars on the 360 under some other name I can’t think of right now.

The US title was WarTech: Senko No Ronde.

I thought it was Naomi, not Type X?

Or am I just confused and we’re talking about the touhou game?

that would be two or three years after Naomi/Dreamcast was dead, but I wouldn’t be surprised it if was Naomi. I guess we could search and find the real answer.

Whoa!

That’s the first Touhou thing I’ve ever seen that looks like it’d be tons of fun.

I’ve heard from internet aquaintences that Genso Rondo is shit, but then again SnR wasn’t really a “review-friendly” game…

Genso Wanderer, which is also getting a physical western release, is supposed to be pretty good.

genso wanderer is basically “here, we’re cloning shiren, not even pretending not to, and putting a touhou skin on it”

just play shiren 5 when it comes out in english this month imo

Does Touhou Genso Wanderer cover every Aqua Style roguelike released so far, or is it just a straight/polished port of the first game?

It’s the most recent one, which already has a Vita release.

I played the roguelike Touhou game at E3. It was really boring and purposeless. Really pretty though!!

You just get dumped into a sprawling labyrinth with enemies you can just ignore because they don’t drop anything useful, get lost a bunch and break some jars that probably hold the same weapon you’re using except +/-1, finally stumble on a boss room where they have a Touhou Talk and then you fight.

Really felt like a polished doujin game.

Aquastyle’s thing has always been good(for doujin) production values with absolutely no originality. They’re that kind of developer.

The weirdest thing they did was like… they released a platformer a year or two ago. Super cutesy Aya/Momiji thing. Here’s a trailer. Yeah, so, that’s real cute looking, right? I watched someone play through it under the impression that was what the whole game was like.

And then he got to the final stage, where it abruptly took a hard turn into body horror out of nowhere. (sorry, couldn’t find a video without talking over it, but skip around to get the idea.) (edit: particularly around 5:00 onwards, jeez)

Guy ended up not clearing the game because it creeped him out hard.

Not as bad as I was expecting. Still weird for a Touhou game.

I’ve always wanted someone to make Senko no Ronde work.

SNR was such a disappoint, partly because I looooooove the character designs/art style, and partly because it’s such a fun and original genre fusion idea.

But…it just…wasn’t that fun or competitive. It was really weird. It was like they didn’t test it for fun, just that it essentially worked.

Though I wonder if it’s just really difficult to make a PvP bullet hell competitive. I mean, competition becomes fun when it’s a dialogue, and it can be hard to respond to a bullet hell array with anything other than dodging them. I guess you have to have intuitive absorb mechanics or something. Hopefully this game cracks that nut.

I wonder if you could make it work if it’s like turns of call and response, where one form is blasting giant bullet patterns and the other must dodge/skim/reflect the shots and then they get a turn to do a giant flower pattern of bullets in return.

Kind of like a Bust-a-Groove/Move approach? But that’s straight Parappa, repeat-after-me though, with attacking/reflecting elements.

What if you both had bullet energy that let you spew out a pattern, but if you ran out, the only way to recharge was by skimming bullets, so you’d want to skim and shoot as much as possible? Also you could get a bomb by charging up enough energy for it?

Might work.

I meant Genso Rondo. But nevermind, it looks to be a not-PC game? PlayStation only?

The remastered version that NISA is localizing is PS4 only. There was a previous Windows version that they no longer seem to sell. There was also a “free” version (demo?) that was delinked, but…

I’m trying to figure out what this “invalid” file is. I can’t check right now, but it may be that same demo was simply renamed so direct links wouldn’t work anymore. You can Google and download “grfree102.zip” from some Japanese download mirror sites, and the Internet Archive indicates that is the filename previously linked on the product page. Bon chance.
