ars is disappointing me lately, they lost a couple of their better writers and I’m not aware of any site that occupies that “we know as much as anandtech but we’re not as anal about it and we’re reasonably good at smartish general tech coverage” niche as well as they do at their best
semi related, i swear gruber was good in like 2008 or something but his meltdown over getting an iphone x review unit after a bunch of youtubers is the most embarrassing thing i’ve seen in a while

… this is weird.
like, even bearing in mind that intel’s iGPUs haven’t really gone anywhere in four years and most of what they’ve been doing since then is progressively ship that GTX 550-ish part on lower-end CPUs, I’m kind of amazed they didn’t have their own new high-ish-end part ready to ship by now…
what is Intel even doing since otellini left. I’ve been waiting to see what the ice lake packages are gonna look like for like two years now and it’s gonna be another year at this point

i mean, I've been cross-checking this for validity, since it sounds so bizarre. Why - or what on earth - were they thinking? I mean, clearly that doesn't (necessarily?) mean they abandon doing their own GPU in the future, I guess, but ... idk, this is giving AMD a huge playfield without any opposition? Or are they banking on some low-power ARM thing and abandon the masterrace™?
my best guess is that Intel’s early 10nm chips (“cannonlake”) still have garbage yields so they can’t afford, in engineering terms, to stick GPUs on there but they need something for next year’s macbooks, so this could be a temporary measure. not clear whether they’ll return to their own mid-end iGPUs by second-generation 10nm or when that’ll ever ship.
This thread always makes me think I upgraded at the wrong time, and then I remember it’s always the wrong time, every time.

I think all the profit and growth is in server chips. Intel probably doesn’t care that much to fix their iGPU problem as long as they continue to dominate the server market. This is also why Intel’s stock has been doing fine even as the PC market collapses.

I’m pretty sure such a computer with this would be the closest the PC world has to a baseline setup similar to consoles and if they price it aggressively enough, will win over the coveted spot of “thing Felix would recommend”

not hugely of interest unless a couple things go in a direction I’m not expecting over the next couple years, but AMD’s modern rewritten GPU driver stack is officially upstream in the linux kernel, so they should actually have windows-parity-ish out of the box support like intel from now on:

haven’t been to this thread in a while but woah it’s kind of crazy the GTX 1070 is still basically going for the same if not more than what i payed for it the summer before last.
oh yeah? well, I got 16GB of DDR3 in the summer of 2012 for $100.

man, the same kit of DDR4 I got 5 months ago now costs 50-70 bucks more
in other bad life mistakes, I bought a 980 Ti because I heard my 290’s fan for the last goddamn time
so like any sane person would with a powerful card, I played important games in 4K with everything turned up
(whoops I have Afterburner set to take bitmaps and got a 24 MB screenshot)

yes, it seems like I finally got my hands on a 1800X during this week’s (less than impressive) consumerism god offerings for 350ish buxxx.
now only mobo, case, PSU are left to decide upon. gfx-card in this machine may continue to be used, i.e this R8?9? 380 will be replaced with a puny nvidia or AMD thing, since my phenom quad won’t care about bitchin powaaa for the browsing experience stuff he’ll continue to handle.
