Felix, did we talk about how geeek is now selling an NCase ripoff now

I been hunting for a 30x0 for a bit and that sounds like a deal. I’ll hit you with the deets.

I was pretty unimpressed with the Geeek build I did for a friend here! I wouldn’t get one for myself, it’s a little too cheap, I’ll be holding out for Formd/Dan/Louqe.

it’s amazing how shitty intel has been for a decade. 50-70 billion in revenue a year for a company that essentially makes one product and they still can’t figure it out

definitely not a full decade unless you only care about desktop chips, mobile/server gains fell off far slower in the mid-2010s. haswell was much better than sandy on mobile and coffee lake was much better than that.

and I honestly think a huge part of it was institutional rot after krzanich took over, they lost too many good engineers

Hey folks noticing my laptop is running pretty dang hot and the fan is on constantly. So should I do this thermal paste thing y’all talk about? How do I go about doing that. already took this thing apart once to put in the m2 drive and more ram.

you could try messing with fan curves and undervolting first if you don’t want to dissect your laptop’s heat spreader. those temps in that screenshot look low to me if that’s under any kind of load, so you could certainly afford to calm that fan down.

apparently amd’s review embargo for the 6000 cards doesn’t expire until they’re already out, which is REALLY COOL since they’re going to sell out 30 seconds after launch. you get to buy blind or not at all, very classy.

I’ll save you the trouble: don’t buy an AMD GPU

so what’s the deal with amd gpus
(serious question, haven’t owned one or seriously kept up with this shit since the hd4850 or something 10+ years ago)

drivers were sketchy and it ran really hot, is that still the case

from 2 years running an AMD card: yes and yes. their OpenGL drivers routinely fuck up shaders https://community.amd.com/t5/opengl-vulkan/help-needed-working-out-why-a-uniform-is-not-active-when-used-to/m-p/413486

also no CUDA should be no sale

I don’t care if you insist you only run games, there will be some tool you want to use in the next few years and won’t be able to

otoh, you can… could in the past… buy an AMD top-end model for a third or half of a top’ish Nvidia card, and that was as good a reason as any if you went for the top-end-est RAM or CPU instead.

and honestly, Katamari or Project Cars 2/Assetto CC ran fine w/out CUDA, so if you are as easy to please as moi, join the VEGA64 Owners Club, an eclectic camp of cheapo fanboys or dorks.

i shoulda just bought parker’s card, amd cards aren’t going to exist either

AMD cards are perfectly fine

if you tune the fans

and run Linux

and don’t do anything in the area of creative or productivity software

but, uh, they have more RAM now!

idk about linux, but I’ll be damned if anyone ever accused me of being creative or productive

“they can only be used for gaming, under linux” is a special layer of hell, speaking as someone who actually has a lot of experience in that department

but it’s also totally consistent with “these are made for consoles with specific expectations of driver conformance”
