fingernail polish sticks pretty good to plastic, so whenever you want to get painting

The Lily58 I have with the exposed PCB is getting there. It has two tiny OLEDs on board, too.

So I’m slowly accumulating parts for a new build, the only things that I haven’t decided on are CPU/motherboard and GPU. For the latter, I’m still holding out hope that I’ll be able to find a cheap 2080ti (although I haven’t seen one for less than $750 locally yet). However, I’m still pretty much at sea for the former, is there a particular sweet spot with the Zen 3 chips that’s worth waiting for? (I almost always fall into the “find the best balance of performance/cost” when it comes to PC hardware.)

IIRC you don’t do video or other multi-threaded work in your day-to-day? I think the 6-core part should be fine, 8-core if it’s priced favorably against the 6-core.

Do you have a Microcenter?

Yeah, usage is almost entirely browser- and game-based. No Microcenters out here, it was a Fry’s stronghold, I haven’t checked to see if they’re as completely barren as they were early this year.

Microcenter is notable just because they’ve done a $30 off motherboard combo deal since time immemorial.

I’d just wait and see how the 5600 and 5700 shake out. I’m guessing the difference in games will be negligible.

GPUs have been a circus but things will be much clearer once the 3070 is out and we know how AMD’s stuff is priced. I think you’ll be able to get a 1080 Ti for ~$300 and a 2080 Ti for ~$500 once the dust settles. (I suspect the 3070 will not outperform the 2080 Ti across the board like Nvidia implied.)

Subtext to this rebuild is that I’ve had this recurring background “helicopter” audio when using a microphone that other people are picking up. I’ve tried a bunch of different mics on different ports and right now it sure looks like it’s something board-level. And if I need to replace my board, I might as well do a full upgrade.

RTX voice baby!!!

or just use a USB DAC, my motherboard audio has been noisy for years, though it’s on output rather than input, and you can avoid the problem entirely for $15

See, I was hoping by posting that somebody would say “you doofus, there’s an easier solution you’re overlooking”.

yeah strongly recommend getting a usb dac or audio interface, think you’re lucky if the onboard isn’t shite

my old mac mini sounded like am radio

RTX voice is also unfortunately named, Nvidia gave up the act and it works on any Geforce card now.

I’ve already got a quite good headphone amp that I want to keep using and my mics are all USB, what kind of device should I be looking for? Most of what I can find are output devices or converting analog signals.
