where’s the 3060 spending like 700 on a graphics card is for people who shoot grouse

yeah, “sure wish I got a cheap panic sold 2080ti two weeks ago” has been my reaction to these 3080 benchmarks. given how narrow the 3080’s lead on the 2080ti is in half of the shit I’m seeing at 1440p, I don’t have a lot of faith in the 3070 doing what nvidia says it’ll do.

bonus: alan turing was a childhood obsession and idk what an ampere is

from looking at the overclocking results combined with the definitely not-quite-linear FP32 performance increase, it seems like they’re hitting some parallelization limits, it doesn’t seem like a thermal issue

wouldn’t be surprised if drivers can improve these cards by a slightly more than normal amount but I’m a little perplexed that they’re shipping in this state, they look more like ~23 TFLOPS than 30, and while 23 sure is a lot, so is 7

I am doing extremely speculative arithmetic that is going to lead to buying an FPGA or something

I put in a SSD PCi into my MSi laptop earlier this year and I was just thinking today wow that was definitely worth it.

I finally went SSD for my drives in the desktop I built this year and lemme tell 'ya…a computer waking up from sleep mode in less than a second is pretty great.

Put your graphics on/nothing will be wrong

I had enabled Wake on LAN on my desktop, a couple months ago, without a magic packet requirement, but it has basically been randomly waking itself up from sleep for nothing the entire time.

Enabled the magic packet requirement, obviously didn’t just "magic"ally work, configured various things in Windows, rebooted. My video card/driver has been acting up since the last big Windows update and now will sometimes decide to hang on a black screen once booted into Windows unless I have all displays except 1 unplugged at that point; so reboot again, etc.

Install some Homebrew shit on the Macbook that will send the packet via a terminal command. Doesn’t work.

Put a port forwarding rule, but maybe need to specifically map to the “broadcast ip” that you need to send the packet to and not the actual regular computer ip, and router doesn’t seem to allow that, etc. Doesn’t work.

Whatever, I’ll just get up and walk over and turn it on if I need to.

getting wake on wlan to work on Windows required an extremely specific combination of drivers and configurations and so on and I expect whatever new machine I one day build to break it but I remember the port forwarding being totally straightforward as far as that goes

ah yes, this notoriously simple process. any time i see the phrase “port forwarding” i temporarily blank out and usually end up closing the tab before giving up on whatever it is i was trying to do.

Honestly the one time I think I forwarded a port the computer might have been faking it

honestly, you have to think of port forwarding like a post-it you place on your monitor.
Two things you write onto that, from whom (or from WHERE) to whom (i.e. to WHERE).

That’s it.
The router that shall work with your post-it is like a colleague sitting at your desk, you have to make him understand, in the end you have to use words he gets to make him… get it done.

Now for windows, imagine a glossy anti-sticky coating on the frame of the monitor…

currently have a chrome extension running that’s constantly reloading 3 tabs in the background every 5 seconds and scanning the “out of stock” button on the nvidia store page and emitting a loud buzz anytime that changes, and it sometimes changes to “notify”, so I sometimes get false positives, but I did see one “add to cart” but didn’t make it in time.

this is how the war against the machines actually starts

all these people are mad that they sold their 2080ti’s for one of these new nonexistent cards, while I’m on a 670 here, I have an actual need. these other people just buy the new thing every year. I’ve never met a real life person who thinks it’s normal to never have anything in your computer older than a year.

The guy who sold me mine texted me to say he couldn’t get a 3080 and I’m just like… ohhh… bummer…
