of course I live by a Microcenter so my view on pricing is hilariously skewed (why would I ever consider a 3000G for a cheap budget box when a 2200G is 10 bucks more)
yeah I’m gonna have to swing by NYC and lie to customs about it the next time I’m seriously considering a new build I think
Microcenters are considered an essential business because they sell WFH supplies
ergo you are buying essential supplies you could not get otherwise
NO LIES DETECTED
I’m leaning towards the R7 or R9 so I don’t think I’ll have any issues there. I’m contemplating what I want in a motherboard too. It seemed more straightforward a few years ago. 16gb of ram should be fine yeah? And the more physical ram…cards? Units? Chips? of ram there are, the faster the access right?
only up to 2 and everything has 2
I had 16GB of ram in my computer and for the most part it did me fine, but because I am a sick freak who opens too many browser tabs all the time, I did run up against the limit decently often. If you share my sickness, consider 32GB. Since I’ve upgraded, I’ve never even gotten close to the limit, even when I’m running a VM for work.
right now you only need more than 16GB if you’re doing Real-Ass Shit Because This Is What Pays The Bills and in that case you’re also throwing down the cash for a HEDT processor and board so might as well grab as much as you can budget
on the other hand, 32GB is going for what 16GB went for just a few years ago so why not
also the whole 2 vs 4 sticks is down more to the motherboard now and manufacturers made X570 boards daisy chain topology across the board whereas older chipsets had T-topology in a few high-end boards which helped a bit in overclocking 4 sticks versus 2 and
buy 2 sticks
16GB of RAM is plenty if you’re an average user/gamer. But if you run a VM with 100 chrome tabs in the background, plus 50 more in an incognito window, while your video editor is open, and you’ve got your current game running, and… etc etc, you might wanna spring for 32GB. Pretty much what OneSecondBefore said.
Theoretically speaking, spreading out your RAM cards will make things faster, but only in certain scenarios, and the difference will not be worth considering, so I wouldn’t even bother looking at it that way. Two things to actually consider:
- The more RAM cards you’ve spread out on, the less RAM you lose when one corrupts or goes bad. Even this isn’t a huge issue, since RAM corruption is so rare, but it’s still more relevant than access speed, I’d say.
- What are your upgrade plans, potentially? There are 4 slots in most mobos. If you use all four to get 16GB, and then decide later down the road you want 32, you’ll need to replace every single slot, and now have 4x4GB RAM cards doing nothing. If you put 2x8, and then decide you want 32, all you have to do is buy two new 8GB cards. No waste, save money. This is the actually meaningful factor.
Springing for 16gb of RAM 7 years ago is probably the only thing that keeps my user experience on my old laptop pretty good. I’m continually shocked by what this thing can put up with.
i tried to open a heic file on windows and it brought me to the fucking store to buy some extension, nice
was actually thinking about upgrading to a newer ryzen now but i really should wait until after these new consoles have come out shouldn’t i
those extensions are free & Microsoft provided, I think they only distribute them through the store for licensing reasons
79p!
ah weird that might be regional
well, as long as it’s confusing,
I ventured once again into the breadbox because I finally got a cheap 500GB NVME drive and now that system is without mechanical drive and
it’s so quiet
it’s beautiful
I guess it’s fast too but who cares about that
this contrasts with my main system, where the latest Windows update makes one of my HDDs shut off and turn back on every 5-10 minutes
yes I told Windows to never power off drives
no I don’t think it cares
Is it one of those WD Green drives, or something comparable.
it’s a Toshiba drive
the WD drive I have in my system (pretty sure it’s a Blue) doesn’t turn off ever, like I told it to
Some drive manufacturers have special low-power lines that are hard-wired to spin down when not in use. I dunno if Toshiba has some such, but they’re disgusting for home use for obvious reasons.
really happy to have joined the noctua family while on lockdown
Welcome to our family!
