you can still brew install osx-cpu-temp if you need to feel alive

Yeah there’s lots of stuff

I like Coretemp for CPU temps and voltage monitoring, if I’m just in Windows and using handbrake or something. Also, it keeps a quick reference track of your max temp. So you could run something and then easily see your peak temp.

in-game I always use MSI Afterburner. CPU/GPU utilization, temps, VRAM usage, RAM usage, GPU clock speed, etc. I don’t always have all of that stuff turned on. But its all useful, situationally.

CPU-Z shows you processor speed and voltage. Afterburner can do that, too. But CPU-Z is useful for looking at turbo/power saving behavior. Also shows voltage.

GPU-Z is similar

use Thaiphoon Burner to see every last bit of info programmed inside of your RAM

not putting it on you or anything but this is a very weird race science name for a computer case

Its probably more to do with this

The new PCIE 4 E16 NVMe SSD drives (jeez what a string of jargon) are out. $449 for 2TB.
look at that heatsink
https://www.microcenter.com/product/608456/performance-2tb-ssd-3d-nand-m2-2280-pcie-nvme-40-x4-internal-solid-state-drive

or someone suggested “Better to buy a Pci-e 4x NVMe Card for $50 to $80 and populate it with 4 x 1tb E12 NVMe drives”.

and for that matter, you could just buy 2 and still probably be doing better performance in some tasks. and save a lot of money, for the same space.

the PCI-E riser card wouldn’t be an option for ITX, though (well you could skip a dedicated GPU and use Intel graphics. Then put the riser card in the PCI slot usually used for a GPU). But micro ATX still feels pretty small and you could have a graphics card and extra cards. I used to have one in the Athlon 64 and X2 days.

it’s funny to see the power consumption of storage going up

Yeah. Sata drives are actually the best option for laptops, due to power usage!

there are some NVMe drives that aren’t that much worse in that respect, right?

like I have to imagine whatever Apple and Dell ship in their 13" portables isn’t more than 1W worse than SATA under load or else they’d probably be loathe to lose the battery life

that’s probably true. But I haven’t looked that closely. I assume the faster and hotter NVMe drives (like a 970 pro) probably use notably more power. But I could be wrong.

Here’s an interesting choice for people looking to buy everything for Ryzen, but wanting to keep it smaller in size.

So far we’ve been talking a lot about ITX for AM4. But the MATX boards are nice too and have better power sections than a lot of the ITX boards (it would be just fine with the new 12 and 16 core Zen 2), costs a lot less, has 4 ram slots, and extra PCI-E expansion. With ITX, you only get 2 RAM slots and no extra expansion.
This Asus is really nice and a good deal “open box”. I might get this one. I like Asus bios.

and here’s an asrock

And the Raijintek Styx is probably the smallest MATX case, which is only a little larger than tha Lian Li ITX case which I linked earlier and isn’t too far off from even an NCASE M1 ITX case. And the Raijintek Styx is a really good case. It doesn’t have the ventilaton problems which the Metis has. And considering its affordable price, is good quality overall. And its mostly aluminum. So its lightweight. It comes in a bunch of colors. With or without a side window. This one is silver.

MATX is probably gonna be my choice.

*actually this Asrock seems to be better than the ASUS. More USB ports, a step up on the audio chip. and waaaay more fan/pump connectors. And it has 2 M2 slots. I think the Asus only has 1.

I apologize for being pedantic but that’s 24L. The ATX Cerberus X I linked earlier is 19.5L. The mATX Cerberus is 18L. I genuinely don’t understand how 24L is “nearly ITX” but 19.5L is a mid-tower.

Guess I was mistaken

The Cerberus looks bigger I think, becuase its an inch taller. I didn’t look at the measurements, just pics of it with stuff installed.

One thing we can all agree on: the Cerberus is very expensive!! I’ve been searching Taobao for a knockoff but haven’t found one. There are plenty of very affordable NCase, DAN, etc knockoffs on Taobao.

If anyone is interested, I can post the most bonkers impractical flashy watercooled cases I looked at on Aliexpress for shits and giggles.

Yeah, I don’t like the pricing on a lot of cases!

So for that matter, if someone were interested in the Raijintek Styx for MATX, but $80 feels too high, check out this Coolermaster:

Its an inch bigger length, width, and height. But its also half the price. And according to reviews, the quality is still quite good.

can you link some of these knockoffs?

I’m curious about the NCASE M1, in particular.

This is a great deal for 2x16GB of Micron E-die. E-die usually play nice with Ryzen. MSI has one or more Ballistix Sport models on many of their QVL lists.

promo code EMCTCTA27 for $26 off

Should be good for at least 3600mhz, with decent timings.

Here’s a nice budget option for ITX case. I had previously overlooked these because the official specs say max cooler height of 105mm. Which is tiny. But I just found out that’s with a storage bracket installed. People say they can fit 130mm coolers in there. So, the Scythe Mugen 5! I will also fit the double size water cooler radiators, if you want. I just found a review which fit a 145mm cooler

Had I known that a couple of years ago, I would have bough this instead of the Raijintek Metis. Because this offers better ventilation for the GPU. This case is a little larger, however.

check out this review. Its really detailed. this case has a lot of clever ventilation going on.

Amazon has an open box MSI B450I Gaming Plus AC ITX mobo for $109. Normally $134 at Newegg.

This looks like a better executed Metis (in terms of ventilation. Internal layout is nearly the same. its a solid layout), which lays on its side. It also claims tool free, which could be cool:

GOLDEN FIELD N-2S

Ah, its a rebrand of this case. Much better pics at this link:

I just tried to build my friend a Ryzen 2700 machine and the stock cooler didn’t fit in a Node 202

this never happens with Intel
