That’s entirely dependent on a number of factors, but if you tell me a 70mm film with decent archival materials can’t beat 1080 I will derail this whole thread off a cliff

how many of those 1080p-plus 70mm transfers are in circulation though

Look, just because TV manufacturers and studios have failed to create value for 4k doesn’t mean I’m wrong

Time to go off to the multiplex and watch 2k packages of every movie played off 4k projectors in the year of our Lord 2016

I saw 2001 as a fresh 70mm print at the Seattle Cinerama and I am forever spoiled. I am honestly unsure if I will see a better looking movie until we can wire computers directly into our brains.

The laser IMAX shit at the Smithsonian looks p. good, @notbov. Better than the dome IMAX but worse than the 70mm Hateful Eight roadshow.

I worked with shitty prints from the festival circuit all the time as a teenager so I could imagine that the average quality of projection has probably gone up. It sucks to go to a movie theater and pay to see something that looks roughly the same as DLP at home.

Things I missed out on going to despite being in the area: Laser IMAX screenings of TFA and the 70mm Hateful Eight roadshow

Money was tight, and then immediately wasn’t afterwards

While the quality of mass projection has probably gone up because prints don’t wear out anymore, new prints and masters made from properly preserved negatives (which are of higher quality because they aren’t copies) should, again depending on a number of factors (probably mostly down to the film stock the original was shot on), beat the mighty 2k limit

Anyway, computers, am I right

it’s so glorious

I moved here and day 1 decided to continue not-having-seen Lawrence of Arabia until I saw it at the Cinerama

4 years later I finally did and I saw every tiny sand-crystal; scene’s like Sherif Ali’s intro play so well when you can actually see horizon specks like eyeballs do

Goodbye to Language on their new laser projector was gratifyingly bright

Unfortunately after their recent remodel they’re even more terrible as a repertory theater; it’s like one cool weekend every 4 months and otherwise the top blockbuster? What’s the point of a billionaire’s play-theater if not to show cool movies?

I saw the Hateful Eight Roadshow on a small-ish screen because the theater’s biggest screen was reserved for Star Wars. I also recently watched all three original Indiana Jones movies in a pretty small theater. Both experiences were sub-optimal but infinitely better than watching those movies at home on my 32 inch 1080p TV. I don’t really have a point other than maybe I’d go to the theater more if there were better movies to see.

I’ve been looking at parts again and something along the lines of an i5 6600 paired with one of these newfangled 1060s is sounding real good. I’m stuck on the case though. I want something quiet, affordable, and understated, ideally with some noise reduction. Seems like I should be able to fit everything in a microATX case but I can’t find the one.

I don’t know if it’s your price range but I just made a PC with this:
http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/node-series/node-202

It’s somewhat larger than an Xbox One and fits full-fat graphics. Just make sure the graphics card is blower-style and you have a fan to help suck air in and you’re good.

ITX cases generally aren’t great for noise but there are a lot that fit full size GPUs now, plus there are only 3 manufacturers that make Z series chipset ITX boards in the $100 range so you don’t have to think too hard about the mobo

I’d like to get that fractal node 202 one but I got like six hard drives and can’t afford any of that synology nas shit and have some other drives in an external thing already

The matx node 804 case has good drive caddies. I don’t like the 304’s.

Yeah I live a life pure and modest and one SSD is enough for me

My router can do a NAS with a harddrive and it works ok (USB 3 is real picky if it reboots but patience helps). It’s the free T-Mobile branded version of this one

My fileserver runs fine in a 304, though I don’t use every slot in the cages (3x3.5", 1x2.5")

do those routers with usb ports recognize more than one drive in an external thing

You mean like attached to a USB hub, so multiple separate devices? Maybe

If it’s a single device that shows up as a USB mass storage device it should be fine no matter what

I just ordered most of my computer bits. I got notes!

Processor – the best “bang for the buck” Skylake chips seem to be the i5 6600K and 6500, for overclockers and normals respectively. If you buy any K model you’ll also need to buy a cooler for it because it won’t come with one. Two popular options are Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO and the CRYORIG M9i. There are quieter options if you’re willing to spend a little more.

Motherboard – as Felix said, you can just grab any Z170 (LGA 1151 for Skylake) from a reputable manufacturer. However, if you don’t want to overclock, you can also go with a H170 or B150. Optional features you might be interested in:

  • an m.2 slot for super fast but currently expensive storage
  • built-in wifi (for mITX builds)
  • one or more USB 3.1 ports
  • a USB Type-C connector
  • better onboard audio (ALC1150 as opposed to ALC with a lower number)
  • Intel network adapters as opposed to adapters by another company
  • Raid configurations for, I dunno, raiding villages through the power of redundant memory

If you don’t care about any of those things then your motherboard could be pretty cheap.

Memory – if you’re not planning on overclocking, just get any highly-rated DDR4 with a speed of 2133 (Z170 mobos support higher speeds, H170 and B150 don’t). I didn’t go too deep down this rabbit hole, but I know most sales seem to be for DDR4 2400 sticks and those work fine in motherboards that only support 2133 (they just won’t memory as fast as they would in another board). 8GB is probably fine but 16 doesn’t cost much so whatever.

Storage – people just buy a small-ish SSD for their OS and games and a large HDD for everything else, though I got a decently rated 1TB SSD on sale and will probably just use that. People love Samsung’s EVO line but it’s pricey. I went with a Sandisk drive.

PSU and case – if you’re going with a smaller form factor, you’ll probably need a fully modular PSU, which just means cables can be attached as-needed and aren’t hanging off the unit at all times. Some cases, like the console-style ones, only take a certain form factor. PCPartPicker makes it easy to find the right kind: they have a compatibility filter you can use once you’ve selected a case, or you can look at builds that have been completed with the case you want and just copy them. For case gazing, I spent some time at http://www.silentpcreview.com/.

GPU – I’m still waiting to see how the GTX 1060 performs, but I’ve heard you can get like 15-20 frames on Doom and Dark Souls III using Intel’s 530 integrated graphics so I’m looking forward to that…

This is almost exactly the build I went with for my wife’s new computer

i5-6500
MSI Z170A SLI
16BG DDR4 2400 or 3000 I don’t remember

She already had a 480GB SD, a new power supply, and an old but serviceable Antec P180

Waiting on a set of RX 480s, one for me, one for her, to be Crossfired when I build a monster once Optane/3D Xpoint actually comes out

A pretty noticeable upgrade from the Core 2 Duo E6600 that I built in college

So I’ve started to look for a new laptop that can at minimum run Overwatch fairly well. My friend recommended me Dell XPS 15 which is what he’s been using for a while now. Looks nice but costs a bit more then I was hoping and has more power then what I probably plan on using. I could still manage to budget it in though without any huge problem and it will probably be my only PC around for at least a while.

The other advice is that it’s apparently a pretty terrible time to be buying laptops with both new Intel chips and Nvidia 10x0 series looming. I really want one now though…

this is one of the only notebooks I’ve seen that has skylake iris in it but it’s not super cheap and I’m not sure I’d ever buy a vaio again https://www.amazon.com/VAIO-Laptop-i7-6567U-Display-Windows/dp/B01BUUEJCI/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1468887876&sr=1-5&keywords=vaio
