To Go Boldly

Star Trek: Picard suuuucks.

Episode 3
has a vape pen
and money!

Episode 4
has a planet with a person name
and a dude gets his head chopped off by a guy doing a flying spin with a sword.
First dude was just in a perfectly normal looking fencing duel beforehand as if to highlight the ridiculousness of what was about to happen.

They are using vaguely racist/colonialist imagery with Picard himself but I have doubts that they’re ever going to actually make anything of it, so it’s just there.
Picard has ‘the help’.
Picard is a white guy who visits foreign places dressed in white.

I’ve been watching TNG and Picard. The contrast is nuts.
I really want Star Trek: Picard to be a much better show then it is.
Maybe it’ll get there.

I almost feel bad about laughing at the comically grimdark death of Icheb. But it was so incredibly over the top and completely unearned.

Legit loving Seven of Nine channeling Major Kira vibes, though.

Am I supposed to not think Seven is 100% totally justified in her revenge because seriously, I kinda got to side with Seven in the whole revenge thing here,

It’s wild to me that episodes like “Far Beyond the Stars” and “Profit and Lace” are in the same season of DS9. Watched those for the first time this month, very natural encounters without knowing anything about them and what to expect, and ho- boy! Season 6 can be your angle or your devil.

Nothing in episode 5 bothered me, so I guess this was the best episode so far.

i have liked this show more than a lot of people but there are really only a few tv shows that can simultaneously be both high camp and also megabummer maudlin prestige drama and picard is trying and they really can’t pull it off

Expanded Picard Episode 5 thoughts:

Wow this show is pretty decent when it doesn’t waste an entire episode on setup. I feel my persistence has been moderately rewarded.

Seven of Nine was fucking great. I would watch the hell out of a Seven of Nine and the Fenris Rangers show. That’s a way better idea than section 31.

Is Picard supposed to be coming off as a smug asshole who’s out of touch? It almost seems like it.

I want to gloat that I totally called Jurati working for the bad guys. Although it was pretty obvious based on the principle that this show over explains everything so if they don’t show something, it must be the setup for a twist later. I still kind of think she’s going to turn around again before the end of the season though.

I’m increasingly convinced that Soji is going to be some kind of new borg queen? Although that raises so many questions.

Woof… that was a rough one.

This one was a little more disappointing than usual because it both wasted Seven of Nine’s guest appearance on a pointless, joyless revenge plotline, AND it really wanted to make a point that the universe is a bleak trash heap of crime and torture, in which Picard’s idealism is infantile.

I agree with @AutomaticTiger in that Picard seems naive and out of touch at best, and recklessly smug at worst. Compare this to the wildly travelled, deeply humble, endlessly wise captain from TNG. So weird.

the picard show seems to be a synthesis of tng man with the awful fuck action hero of the films and shockingly that doesn’t really do his character any favors

i am very curious to see how/if star trek online will try to tie in the plot of picard since the show decanonizes the game so hard

the final cutscene in star trek online is just going reveal the entire events of the game were just fantasy inside a dying harry kim’s mind after he got spaced in that episode of voyager. that’s why he’s a fucking admiral or something and it was so prominently full of b-list voyager cast members

This is slightly off topic but voicing NPCs in MMOS might just be what voyager folks do now. Tim Russ is in The Elder Scrolls Online.

He plays a lizard guy, amongst other things.

i like how sto throws harry a bone by making him a big important captain but if you look at the lore it took him fucking 40 years to get promoted that far

Maybe it’s not really a Dahj-bot thing, but immaculate hair and makeup in bed, AND after waking from a rockous nightmare should tip anyone off to your synthetic origins!

Another thought from this episode: Aren’t we all feeling a little hollow, hopeless, lonely, afraid and, most of all, laid by this era of Kurtzman Star Trek?
