To Go Boldly

children of mars, the picard prequel short is an interesting little sad slice of life if not really necessary

always interesting to see a bit of federation life for regular people though

They should put whoever is in charge of the Short Treks in charge of Star Trek: Picard.

Children of Mars was decent.
Episode 1 of Star Trek: Picard was not.

Star Trek: Picard just feels like a tease. There are some ideas that would make for a great show, and it is very clearly not going to be that great show.

If they would make a drama with zero action it could be wonderful, but there are going to be kung-fu fights and space battles and stupid mysteries the writers may or may not remember to go back to.

Star Trek, including TNG, has always had Kung-Fu fights and space battles and stupid mysteries though. TV financing now vs then is the biggest difference.

If they could have afforded all that shit in the 80s they would have done everything pretty much the same, IMO.

Being episodic avoided shit like Dahj talking to her Mom, but oooh it isn’t really her Mom. Who is faking a live transmission of Dahj’s Mom? If they even remember to go back to that the answer will be dumb.

TNG was about a spaceship and it’s crew. Picard is about a retired man.
Fight scenes and space battles fit better with the former then the later.

It’d be nice if 30 years later with more money they could make a better show instead of a worse one.
TNG was great, but there was definitely plenty of room to do better.

assuming you included Ambojitsu, The Ultimate Evolution of Martial Arts as an example of ā€œTNG was greatā€ since it was absolutely the apex of televised science fiction, etc.

I’m 90% sure Picard is no longer retired and will be a part of a crew since both of those things are in the trailers.

But mystery box marketing has focused on him being retired at the start.

I dunno the slow pacing is annoying but not a deal breaker for me.

The first episode was much better than I expected. But I need a moment to wrap my head around all these chill romulans.

Fight scene with Dahj on the rooftop looked like something out of Power Rangers.

I watched this episode with my drawing group, and then we promptly drew this:

It also cannot be emphasized enough the banner behind this says ā€˜Urusei Yatsura’.

Late Night Picard Thoughts Episode II

I think this episode was a little weaker than the premier.

The last episode had me really raring to see what would happen next and…the answer was aparently Picard makes a request that there was no way in hell they were going to approve.

We find out there’s a EXTRA SECRET DOUBLE TALSHIAR that HATES ROBOTS FOR SOME REASON. Which is yet another example of this show taking a simple decent idea and making it more convoluted than necessary.

Another prime example of this is the aforementioned attempt to get a Starfleet to help him. Why did that need to be an entire extended scene? We could have easily just had Picard complaining angrily he was denied his request.

I guess it set up the secret romulans in Starfleet in that other scene? I guess?

This episode feels like half an episode of plot to set up the actual ā€˜Picard finally goes into space’ that will almost certainly be the ending of the next episode.

The show hasn’t lost me yet but I can’t say I’m especially pleased with how long this is taking to like, actually start.

Oh, and this episode has no way dissuaded me from my belief that the badguys at some point in the development of this series were Section 31. Because in yet another example of over complicating everything section 31 suppressing androids and sabotaging mars to fuck up Romulans would make a lot of sense and be a great origin for the badguys that could be explained in half the time .

Also yikes on casting another Asian woman as a spy? What the fuck, this is getting weird Star Trek.

Blood-potioned.

I watched episode 2 of Picard.
I am probably going to hate-watch the entire first season.

I hated the scene where two Romulan spies in Starfleet talk about how Picard is on to them. I hated the part where Picard was like ā€˜yeah, I thought about calling up the ol’ Enterprise crew, but I couldn’t because they’d do it.’ I hated the part where Picard wins over Raffi Musiker with a bottle of wine.

I think I hate this more then Star Trek: Voyager.

Yes to much of the above, lots of corny stuff to this episode that only felt like half an episode.
BUT, the setup for theresearch expeditions into the Borg cube, like it was the intro to a particularly ominous episode of Legend of the Hidden Temple and the exhuming of Borg bodies was very unexpected and really intriguing to me. If we get to see more of that stuff, hopefully it’s not so sterile like the ā€œNameless is a nameā€ scene, or we only get small hints, or else nothing at all.

This must be what STD does to ya but I’m honestly just surprised to be surprised lol

I like Jean-Luc’s Future Retired Not Really Technically The Military Military Sweater

Hoooooooooo mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn I did not like episode 2 very much!!!

I think every single scene revolved around some baffling Syfy series-caliber plot point. I’ve reached the point where I’ve stopped asking why this is this way or why that is that way, and it’s the second episode in.

Based on what we’re seeing here, this is my prediction for the remainder of the series. I want it noted that I’m making these at episode 2, so if it turns out I’m correct, god damn:

Mothra's Peculiar Picard Predictions!!
  • The romulans somehow created the Borg in their distant past, which is the deep dark horrible secret they kept talking about in this one. This is why they’ve banned the use of AI for ā€œthousand of years.ā€

  • The romulans recently realized they could still control their own creations, and somehow, inexplicably, all synthetics, in a way that will never be explained.

  • The romulans triggered the synths on Mars to destroy the Federation shipyards in preparation for a ā€œBorg attackā€ that will in fact be controlled by the romulans.

  • Furthering the point above, the borg cube they’re working on is an abandoned cube they’re going to reactivate and take control over using their ancient borg trigger word.

I super duper duper hope I’m wrong about all of these, because it’s the shlockiest, most pessimistic thing I can imagine, but I’m also certain I am correct.
