these games are cult classics... OR ARE THEY???

Is Interstate '76 a cult classic? It felt like a big deal to me back in the day, but I never really hear anyone mention it

this is such a delightful question that i’d really love for it to be split into its own topic so that we don’t lose it…:backhand_index_pointing_right::backhand_index_pointing_left:

is there a cut off point for something to be considered a PC cult classic vs. something else? like around the early 2010’s? plenty of indie games are PC-only tho may not be 100% thought of in the way 90’s and early 00’s PC games are.

God I quote this game in my head all time

my brain melts trying to imagine what the parameters of this question are

like, is it Crystal Caves for DOS?
Monuments of Mars?
Icy Tower?
Immortal Defense?
Infiniminer?
Zork Grand Inquisitor?
Uriel’s Chasm?
You Have to Win the Game?
I Want to be the Guy?
The Rise & Rule of Ancient Empires?
Subterranean Animism?
MegaZeux?

are they classics? are they cult? in what senses are a cult classic in games similar to or different from the conventional understanding of cult classics in film?

my feeling is something can become a cult classic basically if it’s old enough and a few influential people still talk about it as important in some kind of way. that’s the way it works for most other media - there’s the obvious stuff like God Hand or Deadly Premonition that has become so well known for being “a cult classic” that that they’re not really “cult classics” anymore. but most stuff isn’t that. so if a few of us just decided that, uh, Ken’s Labyrinth or whatever is important enough to talk about then it is one.

also to add: the other way something can become a “cult classic” is if it develops a sizeable or influential fanbase separate from the mainstream. but that’s increasingly how basically everything in games and a lot of media works? so i don’t know if that’s the best metric anymore.
