X-2 is super cool. I never finished it though. That one’s still on the list, however

i really enjoyed playing through this on PS4 and it seems like the Switch upgrades are even better, but i’m not sure if i’d be down to play through this game from scratch again for at least another few years.

maximalist is a good way to describe it, but it’s also really subdued compared to most FFs?

strongly recommend trying the ‘new game -’ mode, it was unlocked by default on the pc release so i assume same for switch and xbone

Not that I noticed

oh, a shame, it was needlessly locked behind clearing all of trial mode on ps4

PC version is the only one which lets you do New Game + or - , from the start. And no “boosters” for LP or Gil.

The Xbox One X is the only console version which allows 60fps. and both Xbox versions allow job changes at any times and three sets of gambits. I guess the other versions don’t have that?

oh yeah, i guess playing this on my XB would be pretty enjoyable. still, i have to beat FFXIII, first.

Crimson Shroud was a great little game, and the way Matsuno builds out his worlds makes me think I’d prefer he make a new RPG rather than a sequel to his old games. I also liked the ambiguity of FFT’s ending, so no need to have regrets, Matsuno.

I like how Ivalice games have vastly different art directions but small details holds them together

Like, Vossler has such a Vagrant Story face:

And in-game the effect is enhanced by cutscene lightning / direction, and overall tones and colors

I like that when I doze off while playing this game, my party members continue to defend themselves. Perfect game for when you’re feeling exhausted.

been playing this recently, some ff12 notes

  • it’s so funny to me that i keep running around the enemies ARPG style even in situations where i’m sure it makes no difference. it’s like just having the option makes it feel like you’re playing it wrong to just stand in one place waiting for your bar to fill. i enjoy that it feels so excessive to requirements.

  • the intro scenario of the game ending on a sudden thing of “wow, basch is a murderer” but then he tells you the murder was committed by his twin brother and then another character goes “hmm, a twin brother, that does make a lot of sense, ok”. and this is all within the first three hours of the game!

  • there’s something very appealing to me about how the game kind of stitches together seperate, not that large areas that still have kind of a rambling vibe to them as a way to approximate vast open wildernesses. the areas don’t necessarily have a lot of stuff in them but they still feel more jewelboxy than the kind of continuous open world which became the default.

  • favourite weird game design moment was the way the game plays a loud beep whenever an item is nearby and then you get to like a little desert town where beeps alert you to the presence of “mysterious glimmers”, which are little white specks on the groud that you have to stand directly on to pick up, and when you do they turn out to be worth 5gil. well, we have fun.

i’m playing this again on switch, and the “snap” that the cursor makes as you peruse menu items is one of my favorite things about this game

maybe i’ll write about this later but i’m even kinda cool with vaan now

this is the only remaster square has done that doesn’t blow and i’m selfishly glad it’s for my favorite ff

also after all these years i figured out mostly how to script to steal from one enemy in a group and then finish it off instead of just trying to steal repeatedly from all the others.

I played this for like 10 hours some time ago and I’ve already forgotten who’s Basch and who’s Vaan and who’s supposed to be the annoying one. Or maybe I never knew in the first place

lol I remember that part now! Maybe that’s part of the confusion but at least I remember who’s the annoying one now

not to plunge this thread into gambit minutiae but i’ve never quite figured out how to set up a non-annoying steal setup, how’d you do it?

it’s always slightly annoying afaik

i think last time i played i did enemy health = 100% > steal and it worked out pretty well

Foe: hp < 90% Attack
Foe: hp = 100% steal

since they’re already targeting the foe as soon as someone else hits it they’ll switch to attacking and not go off trying to steal other shit, then they’ll move on to the next mob

the key is to either make the thief party leader (and have everyone else set to attack the party leaders target), or use foe targeted by ally
