The Shooting 20XX Part II: Simple 1500 Series

wow this looks sick. how is this not everyone’s go-to reference point for ui that looks like… that!

Yeah I love it…aside from Raycrisis and the floating text overlays in MGS2 arsenal gear I don’t think i’ve seen any other game capture that look. Maybe some HAL laboratory overwhelming info-dense game menus

i think i was vaguely aware of this but ignored it because… well because it looks like the mobile game that it was. it looks close to the kind of structure i was imagining (although i don’t have a good read on exactly how grindy it is, relative to my pretty high tolerance levels) but i wish the action was a little weirder. could do with some weird weaps. still, i might give it a look, thanks!

I like compile games for similar reasons. They aren’t rpg-like, but their typical dynamic AI generally makes them less memorization heavy. They also have good weapon variety, which adds some strategy. And they’re old, so not danmaku.

oh yeah these look good, do you have any recommendations?

the aleste games, especially the ones on snes, mega drive, and mega cd are generally very highly regarded

Aleste is great and I like Zanac on NES and Zanac Neo on PS1 as well. There’s also an Aleste Collection by m2 on switch/ps4. The collection includes the games for Master System and Game Gear.

yeah i wishlisted the m2 collection on the jp switch eshop this morning. gotta order a gift card from playasia i guess. i’ll give them an emulate first. thanks!

do you mean musha aleste? for the sega md one?

yes! and i think the snes one is super aleste, and robo aleste is on the mega cd

thanks. i’ve acquired super, robo, and musha, as well as zanac and zanac x zanac (maybe didn’t need both idk). now all i need is to rummage around for a sega cd core :relieved:

so far: super aleste is tremendous. just a real cool fun time without being stressful or boring. robo aleste is frankly not very interesting and very confusing. and musha aleste is kinda the same. zanac is pretty cool though! i can’t seem to get zanac neo to play at all (my machine wouldn’t let me unzip it and then when i got around that the emulator refused to recognise it). oh well, 1.5 good games out of 4 is not a bad ratio.

I’m becoming so confused as to why so many great shmups are so hard to find a legal way to play. Aleste is a great example. Overpriced collections of a limited switch and PS4 release? I can’t find it on the eshops why?

Several Dodonpatchi games are hard to find a legal way to play.

Judgment Silversword is available for switch players, 360 players, but not PC or other platforms, just why?

It seems like the main problems with good ports are input delay and inaccurate slowdown. Which I’m sure aren’t easy to account for, but also seem like problems that once accounted for with a certain bandwidth of games would become easier, and easier to solve as you move through more? At this point it feels like the work M2 would be doing to put forward another classic would be all the actual features and additions they make.

I just wanna have an easy way to play the good ones!

judgement silversword got released on ps4 a few months ago. it’s packaged with eschatos, like on 360

but otherwise, yes. i think it’s a problem affecting all arcade genres tbh. plenty of excellent beat em ups and fighting games only slightly outside the mainstream that you can’t legally play too

judgment silversword is on steam

Fuck me you’re right. I meant Raident Silvergun.

Money sucks. Make art!

Zanac is wild. There is a lot going on there that might not be immediately obvious, mostly revolving around the little boxes that typically appear in groups of three.

You also get a few seconds of invulnerability after every item pickup. Aleste on the master system has this mechanic as well, but I think the invincibility is shorter. However, you can increase the duration in the m2 collection to make the game play a bit more like Zanac. In general, the 8-bit Aleste games play more like Zanac than the 16-bit games.

Many people love MUSHA. Robo Aleste isn’t as highly regarded. I prefer the Zanac-style games myself. Blazing Lasers is also a pretty good shooter.
