God, I wonder which version of Twin Cobra they are going to use? The JP and the US versions have different life systems, IIRC. I can check in the M2 version tonight, but it’s a big difference in how they play/feel.

Wow, so that’s where Linley got that sword stuff from. I really wish I could play his games on a modern compy.
I played through R-Type Final (the first one) today for the first time in ages. And as much as I like Final 2 and how much they continue to add to it, Final 1 just had an atmosphere that isn’t matched in the new game. Everything looks ruined and dangerous, and the color palette makes it all so unpleasant (in a good way). On top of that, the bleakness of the whole thing.
And there are also little details I’ve always loved, such as the pieces of the mother ship falling down onto the busy street below in stage 3.
And the music in that final stage.

i think a problem with r type final 2 is in its existence. like, one of the many themes of r-type final is how time is looping in on itself and the bydo-human war will never end. so every stage looks as if it’s been wrecked by an unknowably long period of war but is also simultaneously just being encroached upon by both sides.

I;m still thinking about thos fan hypotheses from 11 years ago.
I like this reading. Already one of my favorite things about the game is how desperate and hopeless “Operation Last Dance” is, but I’d always kind of focused on the “true” ending that results in your ship being the ghostly one you see right at the beginning of the first stage.
Without really thinking much about it, I think I’d always seen the trip through the tunnel in the basic ending as a sort of victory lap with the ship sparkling (where I guess it’s actually sparking, the pilot helpless and doomed to die).
I usually say Delta is my favorite R-Type. But I think it might actually be Final 1.
