the sb tokusatsu thread

I was really jarring to me of how brutal the old Kamen Rider shows are compared to how they now seem even more toy centric than new Ultraman.

on the final stretch of kamen rider kuuga.

it’s insane how good it is. so much of it is kind of a slow burn, but even the monsters-of-the-week often have this charm to them. each has their own rule they must follow and they all look and act so cool. the main characters are all so cute. throughout the second half the show gets even stronger and the narrative gets more focused.

so funny how many of the scenes are shot in a way that i associate with brazilian telenovelas – specially the scenes where it’s someone getting into a room and chatting with someone else. those same types of camera-carrying and back-and-forth reaction shots.

the show never is not a bit ridiculous and goofy, but i have been surprised that there are bits of real character drama and gravitas there. it’s just Good Television, all in all. also yaoi.

(arrrgh they are so adorable . . . . my cute little boyfriends . . . .)

ugh ive been so behind on this thread that i wasnt here to see someone talking about mechqnical violator hakaider … damn …

but yeah only the theatrical cut had film to scan from iirc; i like all the probably unnecessary mood the directors cut injects though. on the other hand when it comes to tokusatsu terminator 2 i really just wanna be able to appreciate the graphics in higher fidelity. fucken love that movie, its what i showed @Spiffl to start selling her on toku. how could anyone reject the power of keita amemiya designs … or “if you are justice, then i am evil”

the second thing i showed her is our project of slowly watching kamen rider black here and there. god what a good show. fucked up how many outfit changes kotaro gets. no one twink should have that many good jackets and jeans.

its great, obviously, i dont think anyone needs to hear me say that. i really like its tone; being a move towards drama and darkness but still being intended for a very young audience gives it a really fun texture, and its great seeing minami kotaro, the worlds saddest little cyborg, be a sweetheart whos so good with kids and who gets so fucking angry at injustice. the foley on his crunching gloves when he righetously clenches his fist before his henshin every episode us also really good. great noise. also the closeups in his transform sequence with smoke coming out of his joints… so cool…

also lord does it have a good soundtrack. every insert song is exactly what i want

I am posting this here because I found out about it, and now you have to too. I was posting about this on a discord and will just copy and paste exactly what I wrote it there.

I got this ad on instagram that has sent me down a strange rabbit hole. A TCG called VARZ: Trading Card Game. https://get.varztcg.com/

I saw the box in the ad and was like “whoa, a tcg with live action photos from Japan?” and then I clicked on the link and was like “oh wait, this all looks like AI art?”. And then I scrolled down and saw “wait, there actually is a live action video too?”

WHich led me to https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ0oaFtA33fh4o9iCmCM3DQ/videos

VARZ is a new age special effects drama channel utilizing AI.

It’s apparently about influencers becoming vtubers to fight evil in VR or AR or something?

It’s some sort of web toku. But I can’t tell what is and isn’t AI about it. And this concept is apparently on brand, because it’s being by a talent agency called VAZ that includes vtubers like mikeneko.

and one of the episode has an AI dub where every character has the same male AI voice https://youtu.be/KPrQXs36IwU

It’s also sponsored by a trading card reseller, which I guess is where the TCG comes in

good scene https://youtu.be/KPrQXs36IwU?t=426

Everything has this shimmer to it that reminds you of AI, but I don’t think most of this is AI?

Unless they’re applying AI effects onto them to do… something?

also this kickstarter ad for this TCG does a thing that’s very popular nowadays where if you pay pay $1 in advance to the company before the kickstarter starts, they’ll give you free content
so you can pay so you can later pay on the kickstarter

sorry, this is now the best toku https://youtu.be/ZRyamMx8-A0?t=774
