This happened to me in elementary school too. It was with Power Rangers too and it killed me because I loved the show so much. I remember having this friend at church who was the only one I could geek out about Power Rangers with and we wouldn’t shame each other about our hyper enthusiasm. I still remember the time he said, “Ughhh… I’ve got such a headache, it’s worse than Rita Repulsa’s!!” It has stuck with me forever as the supreme nerdiest thing I ever heard as a kid.
I think we could go for another Pokemon thread in KOP to go along with gametalk while this one can be about Pokemon anime or any other nonsense. There can never be enough Pokemon!!!

In this ep, Ash and his harem runs into a newbie Pokemon groomer lady who’s trying to groom her poodle, but the poodle doesn’t trust her enough yet and goes running off. Ash’s party grabs the poodle and helps the groomer lady by forcing her to give them a tour of town. Meanwhile, Team Rocket pretends to be famous Pokemon fashionistas and do a Wobbuffet fashion show to convince Ash to give them his Pikachu for styling.
Ash and Pikachu aren’t convinced, so Team Rocket settles for trying to steal Fennekin

It’s weird to see James not in drag:
Team Rocket tells Ash and friends to leave and come back in an hour to pick up Fennekin, saying they can only do their magic unobserved. So the gang walk into a park where they meet French Jenny who shows them a photo of their last family reunion. Best running gag.
Jenny warns them about how some dudes are pretending to be Pokemon Fashionistas but are actually Pokemon thieves, and so they run back to find Team Rocket ransacked their shop and left. They eventually catch up and battle.
I like these shots with the Pokemon hugely in foreground with the trainer on the side. The perspective/scale probably makes no sense at all but it looks nice in animation.

I saved a few shots just to admire the way the highlights were drawn when the dog was getting its fur combed, but it sorta read as an animation so I made it into a gif:

Also Serena is cute.
The pokemon anime, and movies especially, play fast and loose with pokemon scale. They’re always drawn to a size that matches their importance, rather than their actual scale, which is typically exactly the same size as their real-world counterparts.

In this episode, the gang meet a giant.
The giant is actually Clemont and Baby’s dad. (He runs an electric shop)
He also has a giant Ampharos.

It turns out Clement is actually Paris’s Gym Leader. But he got tired of gym leading and wanted more time to make bad inventions, so he BUILT A ROBOT GYM LEADER.
KID LITERALLY BUILT A ROBOT GYM LEADER TO TAKE OVER FOR HIM. Except he screwed up at the end and the robot kicked him out of his own gym, and refuses to take on any challenger that doesn’t have 4 badges. Also it electrocutes everyone if they don’t meet the conditions or lose and then they’re shot out of the building to plummet 10 stories to their death.
10 YEAR OLD(?) CLEMENT MADE A MONSTER.
His friends are only mildly bothered by this revelation.
So they break into the gym have a 4-man Sneaking MIssion to try and stop RoboGymLeader but get caught by Clement’s old Pokemon who are now Robo’s slaves.
Ash sends out Froakie to fight because after 20 years, he still doesn’t understand type weaknesses.
Clement and RoboLeader have a dramatic, well animated battle that I didn’t screencap. Then he gets to work completely formatting his creation and starting over from scratch with a new draconian rule of robotics.
Clement designs robots better than Asimo on poop-colored graph paper because he can’t afford a computer.
He adds a robo-heart this time because sYmBoLiSm!!!
Robot thanks Clement for being a nice guy and killing his original self, thus making him into a servant of the man now.
Ash x Clement, Serena NTR
Clement goes to confront his father, who disapproves of his cold gym leading style and just wants Clement to move back home. Clement gathers himself and confesses that he wants to journey the world with Ash. He literally says, “in these last few days traveling with Ash, I’ve felt feelings I’ve never felt before.” <3<3<3
Also that he’s more alive with Ash than he ever felt while locking himself in a gym making artificial life.
Serena says she’ll babysit Baby and GymBot says it will take care of the gym and help around the shop. Ash just scratches his nose.
Serena is cute.
Dad is so happy his son is now a fiery masculine protagonist that he embraces him and Baby and he lets them go on a journey with his blessing.
Also the Dad is secretly Paris’s Batman but that’s not reallyimportant.
This shot was from a flashback montage while Clement was giving his dramatic speech about wanting to elope with Ash, but I liked how nicely the background was painted + godrays so I capped it for reference.
I watched the first episode of this show on Netflix because of this thread and also coincidentally resumed playing X a number of weeks ago and have been trying to reignite the Pokoman spirit. I think the fully realized graphics of the game and the remarkably nice look of the show help. I liked the drop shadows on the characters faces when they were talking around the battle court, the background movement tweens and the CG stuff fit in pretty good too I thought. Kinda wish the monsters never fought in the shows and just only had like animal jobs and stuff.
I understand why for Marketing Reasons but it’s still kinda weird that you don’t encounter PKMN with nicknames in the show or games more often.
Relatedly i give people who don’t nickname their Pocket Monsters IRL the side-eye. These are your digital pets. Like when you get a dog do you just call it “Dog”??
My pokemon are battle machines, designed only to destroy. They need not names, only war.
Now i want to make a team of Pokemon and name them serial numbers. Maybe just use their ID No.
I named all my Pokemon in ORAS after food. At first it started with a diary of what food I ate that day, and then I ran out of original food names so they just started getting fancier and more exotic. It’s fun to look through my boxes and boxes of Poko and remember what I was thinking when I caught them.
My XY team are all named after stages/enemies/bosses/characters/vehicles/power ups/etc from old Sega games. I also ran out pretty quickly and had to switch to retrogames in general. It’s fun to look through though.
My current Yellow game, I’m naming all the Pokos after oil paint/watercolor colors but I’m running out of names for Yellow Pokemon. Not that many yellow oil colors, surprisingly. Watercolors have more but they have less of other colors than oil. If I run out, I might have to just use Crayola names since they made thousands.

Yeah, that’s prob what happened.
Fennekin is upset because her tail got ruined when they got separated. She had a beat here where she saw Pikachu running, got happy to see a familiar face, but then immediately hid her tail behind her back. It was cute.
Also Jessie casually threw a Pokeball at it.
Looking at my metrics, I take 25 more screencaps every episode. I’m 6 episodes behind on posting these screencaps and on the episode I just watched, I took 212 screencaps lol.
It’s partially to get background reference, to screencap nice drawings, and to capture nice animation. Hope you’re all looking forward to looking at infinitely vertically scrolling posts.
