the nuanced sociological themes of mafia 3 vs the facile nihilsm of gta v, or how I learned to love the bomb

looks like they forgot to put copy protection in the game so I’m excited to play a gta-like that hopefully has good writing and was made by people with their souls still intact and not completely worn away from wealth and cocaine abuse

calling it now, people’s pearl-clutching reactions to this vs general acceptance of stuff like gta will be directly analogous to the way BLM protests are “riots” and college town post-game hooliganism is just a celebration

It opens with a LOOK THERE’S A BUNCH OF PEOPLE DOING RACIST SHIT IN THIS GAME BUT THAT’S THE CHARACTERS AND PERIOD NOT THE PERSONS OF THIS FINE DEVELOPMENT STUDIO OK disclaimer.

I feel like the skin textures are a little too detailed for the face models.

Also I’m this big, brawny dude (in a non-gymdude way that seems dinstinct for a vidcon) but my hams don’t fill out my dungarees like I’d think, considering

disappointing, guess I need to dial back my expectations now

Hopefully! Oh parker, you know better than to hope.

I’m happy to be surprised if someone on here says so, but I have zero faith that this is gonna be handled in any way that isn’t embarrassing. (N.B.: entirely naive and earnest would not be embarrassing.)

The opening is structured better than a GTA! It uses editing tricks to churn through setup things quick instead of pretending I’m ever going to really care about these people if I dwell forever in their skin.

So far there have been a lot of baked-in racial slurs and an awkward meeting at a country club!

Towing the naive but earnest line in the early game.

Our Hero has walked through a burned building having flashbacks to the first big Instigating Plot Event before retrieving a Rambo Knife with which he then shaved the sides of his head so as to have a High and Tight.

Then I got tutorial popup about Lethal Takedowns.

The War Just Came Home.

The weapon prices in this game are def nowhere near period accurate.

It’s the black market dummy. Dead-on prices.

YOU THINK I DIDN’T TAKE THAT INTO ACCOUNT?

I FINALLY HEARD FORTUNATE SON

So you finally take over your first area by lynching a redneck heroin boss from a ferris wheel after he taunts you about the deaths of runaway slaves while you fight his goons through a bayou-themed haunted house?

it’s

uh

one of the games writers had wrote this

have you seen any mafia yet

the twist is you ARE the mafia

The mafia… it’s already inside your system… no crime doctor can save you now :frowning:

Not that I was expecting a narrative or mechanical masterpiece, but

How black is this game?

I’m going to end up liking this more than I should just be contrarian, aren’t I? :frowning:
