god I should really just give up on the lower case
I remember emulating Advance Wars in the early 2000’s and I’d love to know more about early GBA emulation history but can’t find much on it. It was so exciting for me to be able to just emulate a game that was basically “new”, on a hardware I couldn’t quite afford as a poor teenager. Kinda like the late Neo Geo era, being so hyped about downloading every new release for NeoRageX or winKawaks or whatever.
Anyway, I’m on a little quest to play all “Advance Wars clones” and just finished High Seize on NGage, so I thought actually finishing the first game in the series might be a good idea. So I did and I saw the credits roll a couple weeks ago. I remembered it taking so long and it eventually getting tiring, but it’s actually quite short? Maybe it helped that I skipped the tutorial maps. And I guess I’m supposed to play it multiple times and take different paths to unlock all the COs, but I can’t be bothered right now. I’m already playing 2. Which seems to have a lot more variety. Or should I say it’s more gimmicky? Maps feel more like puzzles. I still enjoy it a lot though.
Playing war on my GameBoy (DS phat actually) amidst current world events feels both a bit haunting and freeing. Fuck this stupid world. I’d rather try and make sense of what’s going on on this tiny screen for now.
Occurs to me the first time I actually beat Daggerfall was on stream in 2020, and I’m pretty sure I played it first the summer after it came out when @Flylighter brought it to my house, which would’ve been 1997. So that one was 23 years in the making.
I have been writing in all caps since middle school and people often compliment my handwriting even though I think it’s shit. there’s just power in the big letters
fuck it I’m gonna cap in gemstone. according to my experience calculator, if I play at my current rate I’ll be level 100 in about four months. four fucking more months of this grindset no way it’ll be at least six. if my thumb actually ever gets better and I play ffxiv it’ll be well over a year
but ughhhh I wanna be featured on the gemstone Instagram! I wanna come up with a pull quote for my capped interview and I wanna get in the special level 100 character discord I WANT TO BE IN THE COOL OLD PEOPLE CLUB
so far all ive done today is wait in line for a chance at my armor to be made fancier
and i just got these BIG ZEROS STARING AT ME (first zero is todays xp, then my average xp per hour, and the experiecne that i soak per pulse. there are like random … fuck it im copying the wiki (eta got distracted and forgot to post the picture lol)

The term “pulse” is most commonly used to refer to mana pulses when characters regenerate expended mana. The interval between mana pulses is 2 minutes on average, but can vary randomly between 92 to 152 seconds, with a chance of occurring on any multiple of 4 seconds within that range (92, 96, 100, …, 148, 152).
for every one mana pulse there are two experience pulses. its evil! the random pulses are EVIL but they’re global (everyone assigned the same randomness) so its not unfair evil
OH SHIT I GOT SPUN

MY ARMOR IS FANCY NOW

nice
I don’t know too much about early 2000s GBA emulation BUT I can tell you that most of us on advancewarsnet and customwars were far more likely to be playing Advance Wars By Web - which is still alive and kicking!, and doubles as a fun archive of some of advancewarsnet’s Design Maps board’s (aka “the DM”) greatest offerings.
Also of note is that, to the best of my recollection, Custom Wars’ flagship fan games were purpose built rather than romhacks.
