switch or 2dsxl?

been thinking about buying a switch (new battery) so i can play pokémon sword, virtua racing, mana collection and ???

but maybe i should buy a 2dsxl so i can play pokémon moon, style boutique and ???

(i heard people complaining about the new pokémon but i like playing the games without really knowing anything about them so i’m a bit vague about what the problems are. i got the impression that maybe sword/shield was too linear? my favourite pokémon was white because there always seemed to be a couple of different places to explore.)

(i’m confused about which games a 2dsxl can actually play, i’m guessing everything since the 3ds came out but without the 3d function?)

Yes, this.

The switch is kind of a marvel.
2DS is just a 3DS minus a D and a hinge.

Get the New2DS if you are going that route, which still has the hinge, just not the 3D.

the naming of the ds consoles has been really confusing

the “new” isn’t just the addition of the hinge.

“2DS” refers to the 3DS line of systems, but the 2D versions

“new” refers to any of the systems with the accelerated hardware, improved wifi connectivity, and the extra analog nub, as well as two extra awkward shoulder buttons

I’d say so far that the 3DS library is better than the switch’s, and that you should go for the new 2DS XL due to the sheer volume of Stuff that’s on the system both physically and digitally.

However, if you’re interested in modern games like Zelda or other current gen titles that have Switch ports, it’s the only way to play them portable so…

Bottom line: if you’re more interested in exploring an open library, take the 3DS. The Switch is great, but if you’re mainly playing it as a portable system, it might be worth it to check out the lower-priced Switch Lite when it becomes a thing.

I’ve owned both the “old” and “new” 3DSes and to me the important difference is build quality. New has more comfortable buttons and feels better built. You could find any of the early 3DS models for like $60 on classifieds and it has a great library. My “hidden gem” recommendation is Crimson Shroud.

I could never get the key in crimson shroud because the god damn skeletons didn’t drop them after 15 battles. really bad luck I guess

but yeah Crimson Shroud’s awesome, it’s a few hour long RPG which uses virtual dice rolls to mimic tabletop battles

i still play my 3ds xl all the time, its pretty and i dont worry about breaking it constantly, ive dropped my 3ds a bunch

im so afraid of like, dropping my switch on a bus so i never commute with it. sometimes my partner does and its not broken at all though, so if you’re not moe it should be fine

i would say get a switch because there’s so many neat downloadable things and nintendo is into getting rid of services so you might miss out on stuff, the 3ds library will always be waiting

I sure got way more out of my switch in 1 year than out of my (new) 3DS in like 5

I have definitely played over 100 3DS games, compared to my Switch’s 20

and a lot of those switch games are the arcade ports

it’s a system for ports!

Also the 3DS eshop still contains a lot of DSiWare stuff, and the system is entirely compatible with all DS and DSi games

Pokemon Moon is IMO the finest Pokemon they’ve made yet – I found it joyful, creative, varied, fresh. Sword by most accounts is not, so if Pokemon is your main motive, I would say get the 3DS.

I’d suggest picking up Etrian Odyssey Untold 2 as well, which is also IMO the best entry in that series too. (Their naming scheme doesn’t make it really clear, but it’s a remake of Etrian Odyssey 2.)

well yes, of course, but that would be the main reason not to buy the original 2ds.

i love the original 2DS in its cheese wedge visage

I mostly just notice how every one of those I have seen looks like it has been through a car accident. Also I like being able to fit things in my (admittedly really big, but not original 2DS big) pockets. Clamshell design for portable consoles has been nice for me.

The 2dsxl is surprisingly heavy (260g). Also the colour which is cheap in the UK (black and green) isn’t anywhere as nice as the colour which is cheap in the US (purple).

How do you play Kid Icarus Uprising on the 2DS?

i’ve said this many times before, but after the wonder that was the original ds, the 3ds was a massive disappointment. there’s some good games on it, but a swtich or a vita would be a better buy

Apparently the pokemon sun/moon online features are being switched off early next year or something, so maybe get in while you can if you care about such things
