I think there was an Iwata Asks or other Nintendo-produced interview where Takashi Tezuka says Mario Maker started development as a new Mario Paint for WiiU.

FWIU this is the case, and they wanted to really flesh out the “stamps” concept by having all kinds of mario sprites in there so that players could make little diorama-style mario vignettes but then scope creep reared its head and by the time anyone noticed, they realized they had just made a level editor

this is probably my favourite of yang’s work in years
Each of these actions can be endlessly paused, repeated, interrupted, and failed.
This is among my favourite game mechanic subversions and this is a such a great context for their use.
I appreciate the effort Yang’s gone to to understand how UK culture ties into this cultural item. This is truly a rare thing in games, and miles away from the caricature pubs of Uncharted 3 or poe-faced Guy Ritchieness of The Getaway. It’s like one of the few games that looks into British culture in-depth without being explicitly about British culture.
