No developer should sign publishing contracts with them again, but for those that already have, if nobody buys their game, they’re in an even worse situation than having a flaky and/or abusive partner.
i didn’t know (or forgot, possibly) that dangen were garbage
thankfully (?) i already own it, so i’ll just be glad for the free upgrade…
(i’ll bet it’s the sort of thing one could pirate easily enough before contacting the devs directly on twitter to ask for their paypal info, or something along those lines. seems like a viable enough option when supporting small devs who get fucked over by publishers)

Yep, I’ve had experience with partners not paying royalties, but our recourse was through normal legal action to recover sales. Usually this means the partner itself isn’t solvent. Consumers boycotting the game still hurt because there was absolutely no chance to recover non-sales. The boycott should come from developers to the publisher, consumers are not able to solve this.

The devs of Devil Engine above literally are telling people to pirate their game because they have no way of suing Dangen to get their money, because they have no money to pay for a lawyer (and as I recall, it would have to be a lawyer in Japan, complicating it even further as they are not Japanese). It’s a big mess.

the north american league of legends professional league has a player’s association that’s owned by riot and they had a vote on whether to continue with the spring split where the majority (2/3rds) of the players said no
and then riot just decided to have them continue it online anyway
I feel like this is a prime opportunity to talk to esports people about how labor organizing and collective bargaining works and why having your player’s association owned by the entity putting the league on is a Real Bad Idea but for some reason no one is covering it despite it being one of the more interesting parts about esports
and of course the party line is “well the players are just lazy”
