In console mod news, the CleanPower GG was released.
It completely replaces the old powerboard of a Game Gear, so instead of plugging into a wall you can plug-in using USB-C. Not especially useful unless you have a GG with a failed powerboard, or you want to power a Game Gear with a power bank. You still need six AA batteries if you want to use it untethered.
What I find exciting about this is that there is a piece that replaces the little dc plug in port piece, and it looks perfect. Once the mod is finished it doesn’t look like it’s been modified, it looks like it was just always meant to have a USB-C port.
Retrosix announced a CleanJuice mod is coming next year. The CleanJuice will let you charge a rechargeable battery (batteries?) via USB-C. Once that comes out the modding possibilities for the Game Gear are going to open up, and it’ll be possible to customize a Game Gear into something really lovely.
lawson x kirby crossover. i find the colors in this enticing.
That’s cool, but isn’t the audio the big failure point? Has anyone released replacements for whatever’s going wrong there?
I could be wrong but I think the biggest failure point with the Game Gear is the capacitors, which can mess up audio or video, or brink the unit depending on which ones fail. It’s more complicated to repair, but it’s a known issue modders have already tackled and corrected. It’s possible to replace the capacitors with new better capacitors. Retrosix sells a kit for that, other companies probably do too.
i believe there’s also a mod to replace the screen with a modern one, which fixes ghosting and dramatically improves the battery life
Oh yeah, they’ve got a bunch of cool stuff on here. This is like a fancy pants less music focused version of kitsch-bent. Thanks! I wasn’t aware!
i eagerly await the case and button mods, that along with battery, power, screen, and sound mods will finally fix the sega game gear
it would be nice to have a reason to buy cute little gg cartridges
Game Gear of Theseus
Yeah, like GOOD GAMES
OOOOOOHHHH (nah I’m talking out of my ass here I really know nothing about the Game Gear’s library)
there’s a reason for that
But does Theseus still have a Game Gear if he’s modded all the parts?
I just did a fresh install of smplayer on windows and noticed the installer did some where thing where it downloaded a copy of YouTube-dl mid install. So someone was officially hosting it all along.
Also I was really proud of having just so happened to have grabbed the windows binary of youtube-dl two days before it was pulled. I guess this is just like how I saw the surprise “final” Guided By Voices show, and they just reformed two years later.
i remember when this happened with lcd soundsystem and i haven’t been able to get my eyes unrolled since
argh! they’ve done that multiple times. lol. i wanted to see them on their first “final” tour in 2004 in Columbus Ohio and my older brother was going to that show but i was 17 and the venue was 18+ so i couldn’t go. i can’t overstate how much of a bummer that was. i felt really left out at that moment. a few weeks later at that very same venue where GBV played in Columbus is where Dimebag Darrel of Pantera was shot and killed. someone from my high school had been at that show. i don’t know what to do with that information, but there you go.
anyway i did have that Electrifying Conclusion DVD they put out of the ‘last’ show they did on NYE in 2004 at the Metro in Chicago. it was… okay i guess? tbh watching 3 hours of Robert Pollard drunkenly slurring his tracks doesn’t really appeal to me as much as it does to a lot of other people. i ended up seeing Robert Pollard at the Metro when i was visiting Chicago a year later in 2005 though. and that was fine. also saw GBV when they reformed with the “classic” lineup in Ohio on their first tour 2010 in a show where i was living at the time in Oberlin in a random gymansium and was in the very front of the venue the entire time… so i got my GBV fill in the end i guess. never liked the post-reformed music or 98% Robert Pollard’s music in general post-2004 or 2005 tbh.
Pollard just can’t quit. Never trust him when he says he will.
