Do you vote for the atmospheric strategic soul sucking semi-action game staring an international movie star or the game that makes you fight three increasingly awful boss battles in the same pillared room with a shit camera. Nuanced debate can come later, now I just want to feel vindicated and stop screaming why at my computer that anyone in 2018 would like Devil May Cry 1.

Onimusha is what I bought a PS2 for.

Devil May Cry changed the industry and games copied ideas from it for a decade.

I can’t justify voting in this poll since I’ve only played DMC; also I don’t have the appreciation or understanding of this style of game to back up any arguments. I do still remember the original DMC with fondness, though!

I’m gonna dunk on you and then I am going to challenge this point: The dunk “you’re right Triumph of The Will is the best film ever made.”

Okay actually challenging that idea. What exactly did it change? That it had BITCHING T00D? Dante is paper thin as a character with non-catchphrases. The most memorable moment is it when it tries to have weight FILL ME DARK HEART WITH LIGHT! That’s legit hilarious stuff that is the complete opposite of what it was aiming for.

That it had an awful camera in an era that games were just flopping around trying to find what justified a camera? That the camera actively hurts and infuriates the borderline okay battle system? That the player’s skill set doesn’t match the environment or enemies? Oh do you mean when you get a double jump and it there are still areas you can’t jump high enough up too.

To back down a bit I am really drawing a blank on what games copied ideas from it? There is the straight line of the people that were involved in it and future projects they were involved in, but that doesn’t really count. What if there was a cool fun 3D action game isn’t a galaxy brain idea. Any good will towards Devil May Cry reads to me like PS2 owners were real desperate for something good, and this with a thin-veneer of “movie like” and “badass” was an any port in a storm situation.

I’ve played maybe three or so hours of the first Devil May Cry about a year or so after it came out, and found the camera so infuriatingly awful that I never played another Devil May Cry game ever again.

Also, I thought Dante was really dumb.

This time I agree with everything Rudie says.

if :featuring_dante: had been on any other game, i would not have bought it.

Please Please don’t use “abortion” to talk about video games.

Earlier tonight I was going to do a gamer stream of Onimusha – inspired by discussion on this very forum – but then I got real sick cuz I made ramen for dinner, right? My mom loves my homemade ramen. But then she was like “Son, I am too ill to eat…please…let me live vicariously through you.” So I ate two giant bowls of ramen and spent the entire evening in a daze and in pain.

Then I had big time diarrhea and felt a lot better.

Anyway somewhere in there I played Onimusha for 2 minutes. It wasn’t as graphically impressive as I remembered, but I dug the way it looked. Had some kinda PSX textures on the character models? Which is maybe cuz I was playing it in an emulator but I liked it. Look forward to playing it live, on gamer stream, and I hope you all watch and chat with me and tip me tokens for being so sexy on cam. I will slice up ninjas and demons and hit circle to suck up souls. That’s all I remember about the game: it was short and you sucked up souls.

Devil May Cry 1 was never good. Jump is mapped to triangle. I think that’s an important thing to remember, because it was horrible.

Onimusha is eating one bowl of ramen. Devil May Cry is eating 2 bowls but neither are very good.

Onimusha pros:

  • stars a digitized likeness of international heart throb takeshi kaneshiro (chung king express, fallen angels, etc.)
  • tank controls
  • pre rendered backgrounds
  • its like four hours long wtf
  • takes place in a spooky castle

Devil may cry pros:

  • the main character has white hair
  • reminds me of blade
  • hot topic core
  • has dialogue like flock off featherface
  • takes place in a spooky castle

DMC1 makes me remember how much better a game DMC3 is.

So I vote Onimusha, even though I have only barely played it, just because it didn’t immediately make me want to play the better version of itself.

There weren’t really any games of this type on the GameCube were there

I voted Ninja Gaiden

mapping jump to triangle is such a pure and innocent thing. It’s the top button! It looks like it’s pointing up! That’s the jump direction.
