Star Wars The Spoilers Awaken

Aggh thank you, this names what I felt during, and honestly throughout the whole flick

I really don’t like Who

what

no he wasn’t

  1. somehow escapes a billion storm troopers while running around Death Star
  2. can easily shoot down TIE fighters from Falcon gunpod
  3. knows how to fly an X-wing immediately
  4. destroys Big Bad Orb his first try
  5. is one of the few surviving pilots

Really the biggest bumbles he does are getting knocked out by the sand people and being naive in the cantina?

What’s the deal with there only being X-wings and TIE fighters? Like, I mean, the major strategic mission was a bombing run, throw some Y-wings in there at least.[/quote]
X-Wings are Y-Wing replacements. Pure upgrade. Their presence in the Rebel fleet owed to its ragtag nature. Real question is, where are all the A and B-Wings?

Hm, this is actually a good point as previously I would have agreed with Vikram. Maybe the difference is in spite of Luke being awesome at everything, he just continually acts like a bumbling idiot? In that case I think Rey is actually a nice contrast. Though she is kind of OP, at least the character is played in a way that makes it clear that others are actually impressed by her talents, and she has a capable but not exceptional foil in the form of Finn to make her seem even more impressive. In ANH Luke is continually portrayed as the greenest of them all, yet is consistently able to do amazing shit without there having been any indication that he ever did anything other than goof off and shoot womp rats before embarking on a crazy space adventure. I mean, arguably in that case the answer is “the force,” but Rey both has “the force” and also whatever hellish life she had to go through as an orphan scrapper on Jakku. Makes sense to me.

Still think her figuring out how to do jedi mind tricks on her own is kind of a stretch, though. I mean, it seems like in this world not that many people even know what jedis were actually like, so how does she even know that it is a thing that she can maybe do?

But, it’s just more fuel to the Rey Kenobi fire, so I’m fine with it.

sounds like people are looking for a Rey

OK so he’s sort of a lucky idiot but a good pilot in ANH, but basically everything he does in Empire is bumblesville. He immediately gets knocked out by the ice monster then stupidly runs out into the freezing cold with no supplies and what must be a bad case of frostbite on his feet instead of killing it and staying in its cave for the night. He has a good showing in the speeder battle (proving he’s a good pilot, which we already knew), but he’s a petulant little dweeb on Dagobah, then he runs off to Cloud City against Kenobi and Yoda’s advice to save Han and Leia (which he totally fails to do) only to fall right into Vader’s trap and almost get killed but is saved by the skin of his teeth. maybe the next movie Rey will encounter some real setbacks.

Ugh ESB is so good I really want to watch it again now

At the very least, we know that Rey will lose a hand in episode 8.

congrats to Oscar Isaac for being our generation’s cool hip nerf herder

It’s only just dawned on me that this is the Inside Llewyn Davies guy and the Ex Machina guy

prophetic:

perhaps this means Justin Timberlake confirmed for Ep.8???

looks like i gotta be that “hipster jerk” and tell everyone how good John Boyega was in Attack the Block and how they should’ve seen it when it came out

Really enjoyed it but I think it will go down as the worst of the New trilogy.

Mainly because what most people are echoing, its too similar to a new hope and its too steeped in established Star-Wars nostalgia cues. I think its fine they played it a tad safe with this film to make sure people felt at home and to not rattle the more casual areas of the fanbase.

The new cast is really great and they will be able to run in new directions with the next two films (and side projects) now that they have established themselves as being more like the Star Wars you like and not the Star Wars you hate.

I went into the movie sort of assuming the previous “expanded universe” stuff would be at play where Han and Leia have Jedi twins - so I just felt like Rey and Ren would be brother and sister but they obviously are trying to keep Reys origin far more a mystery and she could have a few different origin options. Still won’t be shocked if shes Han & Leias daughter.

Hans death is really telegraphed and I wasn’t surprised, but it will work well in the long run. Harrison sure seemed either old (which he is, 73) or uninterested or both, for a lot of the film. Sometimes he was fine, sometimes he seemed absent. It took me out of a bunch of scenes because it just seemed like he wanted to be somewhere else ( where he would be spending the forture he got paid for this). Hopefully Oscar Isaac will take the reigns.

Can’t say I was too thrilled with Lord Snokes design (i.e., lets give Andy Serkis a job) and implementation, nor am I too thrilled with Maza (the orange lady). Both need a whole hell of a lot of expansion as to why they are even needed and both are the glaring stumbling blocks in the entire films Special Effects departments. The whole “lets visit this 1000 year old ladies wacky castle on planet Norway and stumble upon a treasure chest with Lukes lightsabre in it” was the first thing to really swing the great mood I was in and left me scratching my head the most when I left the theater.

One wild prediction I can muster is: Finn will turn bad and then turn good again over the course of the next two films.

I liked the new characters, Fin and Pao’s battle was fun and I felt happy for their short-lived victory. I really want to know what they are going to do with Rei to get her to get more competent without getting too competent. Or I guess Darth LnknPrkFn94 could get more disciplined and raise the stakes.

Have they announced an extended cut yet? They have to have more to that freighter fight scene

You put some dudes from The Raid and a wookie in the same space but you don’t

gosh

besides tossing Captain Phasma in a garbage chute as an off-screen joke, this is my biggest disappointment of the movie

Still think her figuring out how to do jedi mind tricks on her own is
kind of a stretch, though. I mean, it seems like in this world not that
many people even know what jedis were actually like, so how does she
even know that it is a thing that she can maybe do?

Because immediately before that scene Kylo tried to use that ability on her, which she broke through pure force of will. That very easily could have been a 2-way street leading Kylo to unintentionally reveal all kinds of knowledge, like the base layout, to her.

Think it’s just been a while since you guys saw harrison ford in a movie. he smirks with half his face and looks bored with the other half. that’s just what he does. blade runner nerds still cling to the movie myth of ford “intentionally botching” the voice over because they don’t realize some people just have different personality types and not every one has a constantly enthusiastic one. that was in 1982 now he’s 70 years old.

I didn’t like when chewie got shot. It’s like when they kill a 100 dudes in a movie and it’s fine but then a dog gets hurt and now a line has been crossed. Don’t set me off

hell I was upset that they killed Han in front of his dog

Yeah but Chewie getting shot lead to him bragging to that Nurse about his adventures
