ok i had to look this up to make sure i wasnt going off on some weird shit on my own and no this is literally the first episode of tos
too cerebral if you ask me
TOS is an uncomfortable reminder of how much sci fi of that era was mainly metaphors about the treachery of women
If you haven’t, you gotta read James Tiptree Jr’s short story, “The Women Men Don’t See”
t’pring episodes of SNW continue to be one of my favorite sitcoms
Maybe he just needs someone to explain to him that not all comics are like that.
hes perfect
the nurse chapel/spock romance thing on SNW is even wackier when you remember that canonically sometime in the next two years she gets married to her space archeology professor and after he dies she tries to use a love potion on spock
well, it’s refreshing to see a star trek prequel have consistency with TOS’ style for once
I loved loved loved this episode.
I can’t think of a plot thread in this I didn’t adore. A few that stuck out to me:
-
Pike killing himself to successfully cook Vulcan dishes, absolutely nailing it, having his audience say it fucking sucks, and being a wounded puppy about it for the rest of the night.
-
Ortegas and Uhura berating Chapel to be honest about her feelings to the giant energy blob.
-
Spock’s mom being a certified primo milf AND having a heart-wrenching story AND being a fun supportive character for our boi Spock.
Wow. This thing in S2E1 of Strange New Worlds where the medical people juice up and fight a ship full of Klingons. Is this setting up some kind of side story where they are special ops people or what?
Yeah! It’s pretty weird how M’Benga and Chapel are being built up as good hand-to-hand brawlers! And the existence of what Sleazy coined Dr. M’Benga’s Fight Juice is a pretty wild addition to his character that only started in S2E01.
Chapel especially just seems completely mis-cast as the badass CQC fighter? I guess some kind of Klingon War flashback could establish them all as former prisoners or something and explain why Chapel consistently defeats everyone who tries to attack her, like in the pirate ep and the sweaty light-virus ep.
I think for M’Benga a least, his actor, Babs Olusanmokun, is evidently a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and champion:
Which, sure, let’s put that in the character.
gotta say with all the retroactive continuity of the friendly emotional enterprise where everyone is in everyone’s business and everyone would have stuided up on the crew, the TOS conception that vulcans are mysterious and kirk doesn’t know about spock’s marriage and doesn’t even know that sarek is his dad is pretty wild
i love that they appear to have used low-volume perforated cymbals to style the drum kit in the lounge at the end of this episode
like these but maybe not exactly
they decided to upload the lower decks crossover episode early if you want to watch it
that was definitely one of my favorite episodes of both lower decks and SNW. i mean it’s just trials and tribble-ations redux but the time travellers are as dumb at it as marty mcfly and that’s not a bad thing
having the klingon war be taken seriously on a basic ground level procedural tv episode of competence is good. on discovery it was so tied into weird cannibal klingon game of thrones melodrama and the crew skipping out on months of it in the mirror universe or whatever. always good to see ol clint howard pop up again. still can’t help but think the base concept of a diplomat trading on the reputation of being a fake war criminal would have made a banger ds9 episode though.
that musical episode was really a delight but yeah the highlight was the klingon boy band part of course. they really have made a bigger deal of hemmer than when he was ever on the show but i guess i basically buy it at this point emotionally. also neat that the hemmer guy could come back as a klingon. this really does add a tinge of tragedy to how spock and chapel interact on TOS. i forgot that carol and david are still a factor at this point on the timeline like oh yeah, hahaha. anyway i was already mad they never let scott bakula sing like all the other shows but now i’m really mad. now i am also curious about the universal translator working through the song.
LMAO
that’s maybe the only musical episode I’ve ever liked
