Obviously we’re always going to use Disco, it’s like the best abbreviation for a show I’ve ever seen.
lower decks really should revisit the TOS idea that there are just multiple jesuses throught the galaxy as a naturally occuring phenonmena
Sorry, STD is reserved for speedy trial demand
they really killed off another queer boyfriend and turned him into a space ghost…just bad optics…they even tried to get people excited saying here’s star trek’s first trans character and killed him off in his first appearance. what even goes through your head
i appreciated how the trill symbiote zone is one more psychedelic zone for them to play around with in a weird avatar the last airbender kinda way. the caves looked pretty much exactly as cheap and goofy as they did on deep space nine which i appreciated. suddenly trying to give detmer a personality and character feels like what they tried to do with montgomery on enterprise season 4 i suppose. hope she is fleshed out enough to be recognizable as even a two dimensional character by next year.
now i’m even more confused about when calypso takes place considering the ship is developing that personality now. did it take place while they were in the wormhole somehow? i guess it depends on if that michelle yeoh series takes place in the “present” or back with pike and the crew
edit: also riker was technically the first human to host a symbiote at least temporarily i think
fucking incredible, given this lazy garbage:
EDIT: Also wait that’s twice just in Discovery, maybe I don’t actually want to keep watching it then (I have only seen season 1, and it did not really do much to make me want to keep watching it)
I put off watching due to this warning and I wish this episode didn’t leave a bad taste in my mouth
It hit like a bowling ball to the gut but an artless one
Better luck next time I guess
based on his charcter setup is david cronenberg(!) gonna be in the section 31 spinoff because he was pretty fun
also did they imply that mirror people are genetically evil what in the hell hahahaha
Disco has a weird love affair with race science and eugenics that flies in the face of its supposedly progressive politics
In ways that feel egregious even by the standards of Trek
that does seem worse but star trek is classically all about projecting stereotypes about human ethnicities onto aliens, which always cuts against the sort of utopian outlook on future human civilization imo
thats why I said even by trek standards!
Also why DS9 is the best one because none of the aliens central to that series map onto real world ethnicities
yeah ds9 rules. i like all star treks but that is the only one that i would ever try to convince a non-fan to enjoy. politically it does feel very 90s/clintonion/neoliberal, but not in a bad way necessarily. i mean i feel like it is sort of critical of the earth as arbiters of galactic justice idea, not just celebrating it via analogy in a way that trek can often do
I mean for it’s occasional issues, DS9 is very clear the space CIA is if anything, as bad or worse than it’s Romulan and Cardassian counterparts.
And at the end of the series they go out of their way to tell you just how much shit sucks for the cardassians now that their entire culture has been driven into the ground by the federation and dominion.
It has problems but I cannot think of anything as mainstream as DS9 framing stuff that that way ever.
It still feels fresh and ahead of its time imo (whereas disco is fully neoliberal accelerationist)
Like can you imagine another star trek doing that two parter about travelling to the hypercapitalist past (the 2020s lol) and literally starting a riot to overthrow the old system?
Or the episode where Rom starts a union! AND THEY QUOTE THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO!
like I think DS9 couldn’t be help but be embedded in a clintonian context but they used the show as a platform to undercut american exceptionalism rather than just cheerleading it
The grand Nagus being played by one of the most politically left actors in Hollywood is also an extremely funny subtext to me, but I dunno if he was cast for that reason or if he just got cast for being an excellent space gremlin.
Still really funny either way.
Yeah! It’s fantastic. And it does all that while still being corny and earnest and as entertaining moment by moment as any other trek show. Unsurpassed IMO
I… cannot believe, we’ve got more Section 31 shit this season. adjkffffffffffffffffffffkasdfjlkasdjfklasjdfkljs
Another episode which should’ve been one story instead of seven.
