… are Hexen and Heretic any good? The PC local coop is tempting me…
they’re… fine
the rerelease has done a lot to mitigate the worst of it by rebalancing enemy hp totals so that every enemy isn’t a ludicrous bullet sponge now
level design ranges from okay to annoying maze, with hexen leaning heavier into annoying mazes
Hexen is not necessarily a good game, but imo it’s worth playing for its unique level design and ambitious structure. It often amounts to “what the fuck am I supposed to do now” but there’s a certain magic to it. “You’ve completed 1/20th of a switch puzzle” indeed.
I played hexen or heretic and after an hour I wanted to barf
I wonder if it’s the weird faux 3d rendering? Or just first person in general?
Outlaws is a great game that I love but it is actually evil to charge 30 fucking dollars for a game anyone could play for free right now with about as much effort as it takes to dig out your credit card and type the numbers into Steam
It’s standard operating procedure for all remasters now. The dawn of war remaster is 30 dollars for subpar work even. The system shock 2 remaster is just a modpack you could put together yourself, the unofficial patch included in it isn’t even the latest version
meanwhile petroglyph updates star wars empire at war once a year with stuff modders want or need to keep the game alive, they literally swapped the game to a newer x64 engine and it was free lol. they didnt even make it look ugly or ruin it somehow!!!
this isn’t true. While the SS2 remaster includes a few popular mods (400, SHTUP, and the community patch) the main mod in the list is exclusive to the remaster and the engine itself is not newdark but ss2 ported into the kex engine. Hence the game has hud scaling, fonts that aren’t extremely pixellated and coop that doesn’t require extra setup steps.
I’m happy to be wrong, but I still wouldn’t pay 30 dollars for it. that does put it on the better end of night dive remasters though
like with most night dive releases, they just gave it to me for free because I had the original version on my account
the only night dive remaster I’ve played that really offended me was blade runner, but that ones just a disastrous effort, actively worse than just running the game in scummvm
These motherfuckers have another thing coming if they think I’m going to buy this again. There’s nothing wrong with Fresh Supply, maybe you could’ve just updated that instead? Nightdive really entering into their greed era. 24.99 for a re-release of a build engine game that already has a perfectly fine re-release for half the price. really. we dont even get a discount for owning the previous “remaster” lol
the system shock 2 remaster doesn’t even have properly working music in the final boss fight and it’s been out for months

Mystique: Ages in Time is a fantasy themed boomer shooter, developed on the classic Build Engine, and hugely inspired by games like Heretic, Hexen 1 & 2, Duke Nukem 3D and Quake. It features 30+ levels, pixelated graphics in the style of the 90’s, and an original soundtrack. It was originally released in January 1998 by a large team of independent developers, for free. Some of them went on to successful careers in the gaming industry, and later went to work for companies such as at 3D Realms and Ritual Entertainment, where they worked on cult games like Prey, Sin, Heavy Metal, and others.
For almost a year, I’ve been doing a remaster of Mystique: Ages in Time. I played this game as a kid, and because I have a lot of affection for it, I decided to update it and make it into a much better experience. Original version was probably released unfinished, and nowadays it’s barely playable, and in some cases, cannod be finished without cheats. I fixed hundreds of bugs, polished the graphics, reworked the game balance, updated all 30 levels, added new gameplay mechanics and new enemy types, converted the game to widescreen, reshuffled the music tracks and even remixed some of them… The list goes on.
With this remaster, I hope to introduce this extremely obscure game from the 90’s to modern audience. In my opinion, a ton of effort was put into it, especially for being largely developed in 1997. This game features some amazing atmosphere and tons of creative ideas, so don’t miss it if you’re into retro first person shooters!
It can’t be a “boomer shooter” if it was released in 1998 goddammit!
I choose to believe that the ‘boomer’ in boomer shooter refers to the cyborg antagonists of bubblegum crisis
