sprite-based first-person games (with mobile avatar and granular turn increments)

THE RULES

  • can apply to just one segment or mode of a game
  • first-person perspective - can be optional, but must be toggleable
  • mobile avatar - can’t be fully stationary
  • player-controlled camera rotation in less than 90 degree increments
  • significant portion of the game objects are sprites (subjective) - reduction: doom, not quake
  • must not be bound to a rail - must not be bound to move in one direction along a track
  • no mods / total conversions (for the most part) - this field is well-documented already

Is there a single one of these that doesn’t have hilarious sprites? Probably not.

Eradicator

I’m just browsing GOG now btw. FPP tag helps since they don’t make many of those anymore.

if someone can please help me find a game i played in the late 90’s on a MacAddict demo disk

you play as secret service (i think) trying to protect the president from a terrorist attack while running around the west wing and other government buildings (or maybe just the white house)

no idea if it came out on DOS/Win or not

sprite-based FPS, of course

not this game:

the mega drive has corporation, zero tolerance and bloodlust, amiga has alien breed 3d, testament, gloom and project intercalaris.

You’re thinking of Prime Target which I’m doing a video on soon. It ran on the Marathon 2 engine. Mac only.

holy fuck why is it so hard to find info on this game! THANK YOU

There’sa no shooting but the 1982 maze exploration game Wayout for atari 8-bit computers is worth a look for the music and early smooth turning is a 3d environment

You’ve got Tekwar listed, but not Witchaven which was made by the same folks, though not quite as bad as the former but still rather rough as I recall from the demos I played at the time. Though it had some pretty boss cover art.

I just found a copy of that! I should see if I can get it to run.

Also remembered another Wolf3D-ish one, Nitemare 3D.

Most (all?) Mode 7 racing games allow you to turn around and have sprite cars. There’s lots of them on the SNES and GBA, my favorites being the Mario Karts and AdvanceGTs.
