Sonic Mania

I died the most to:

  • falling off of a biplane that you’re not supposed to be able to fall off of

  • an elevator

  • accidentally pressing the jump button one too many times during a bossfight in which that expends your rings to do a useless dash move

I somehow managed to get to the animals container and rescue them without beating the boss in Garden Press Zone. He followed me there and hit me frozen while the Robotnik animation played and the game softlocked. It was fine though because after resetting, the save file had advanced to the next zone already. I suppose this will appear as a speedrun strat at the next GDQ

i played a bit of sonic cd and disliked it, and now i’m playing sonic 2 and i’m stuck at some forest level. i never really played any of these games and i don’t know when i’ll buy mania but, uh, it makes really happy to see all the admiration this game’s getting! and the people making it too, ofc (apparently i know someone who knows a guy who worked on it too! whoa)

ugh, that level blows. i think u may have picked the worst way to get into sonic lol. CD is imo the best game, but it’s a bad starting point cuz it’s REALLY complex. meanwhile, sonic 2 is the worst one of the classic series, with a number of stinker levels. It does also have some of my all-time favorites, tho! Like Hill Top Zone, which is A+

yeah CD is only recommended to people who want a sonic game that goes against how most people would intuitively play sonic. it’s very good on its own merits but it’s pretty weird and dense!

I can’t in good conscience agree that 2 is the worst of the original series, in part because it starts so strong and the aesthetics are imo the most endearing of all of them, but the later levels are really bad and the special stages are not great. the best case I can make for 2 over the others is that most of the vanilla Sonic 3 levels are pretty big and boring at times (S&K is much better if a little spare), and 1 is overly slow and technical so it’s hard to return to.

this is a very good illustration of why it’s nice that mania exists

well shit,

okay i don’t really feel like playing sonic 2 for the moment (i agree that the game starts amazing but i’ll be damned with this forest level honestly) so then i’ll play. . . . 3&knuckles, i guess? i played a bit of that and enjoyed it. yeah

It’s a really solid and creative entry, it just feels really quite long.

wait, what’s the forest stage if not hill top?

mystic cave I assumed

which is indeed dreadful

everyone on this board has the wrong opinion about sonic but if you’re not feeling any of them including 3K then sonic mania’s probably not for you?

but that’s a cave!

and i never thought it was especially bad. it was better than oil ocean and metropolis, at least. plus, it has great music~

just checked: it’s aquatic ruin

i hope that’s not the case!! mania looks and sounds so so nice. i don’t know, these games seem to require a kind of mind space i’m not used to having in vidgams, so it’s sorta uncharted territory as of now

oh whoa if you don’t like aquatic ruin there’s no helping you

sonics in general do certainly have a different rhythm than other platformers like a weird loose jazzy maze version of a Treasure game

on the other hand maybe you’re like me and AM2R in that I enjoy the aesthetic of metroid games but couldn’t really finish any of them except the fan made one

i tried another route and beat zone 2 of aquatic ruin!

the casino level kind of owns

i can see that happening

My first Sonic game was Adventure so uhh I don’t really have Sonic nostalgia.

I was having a great time with this until fucking Metal Sonic and Hydrocity Zone. Hydrocity Zone is just antithetical to how I want to move around. :expressionless:

The levels seem to be getting progressively “uglier” like more industrial. Is it because I’m getting closer to Eggman?

Hydrocity Zone was my favorite Sonic 3 level, but when it comes to Sonic games that can be hard to disentangle from “favorite music”

i’ve never seen anyone say that they even like hydrocity before, let alone name it as their favourite! it’s a surprise they put it in mania, tbh.

So does Hydrocity Zone. It’s like we’re all playing different games!
