I have little doubt, aside from factors related to timing, that you would want to be anywhere except witches.town but I have not yet joined mastodon myself (mostly because I often forget to sign up when france’s witching hour comes to pass)

queer.town is also alright. i joined that one first initially because of a friend.

alright this may sound a bit weird. bear with me.
1 ) go here: https://joinmastodon.org/
2 ) make an account

some might say this is superfluous if you only want to join one instance, however, having an account under mastodon.social is pretty handy because it connects you to a huge, HUGE web of all the other new pple, the big guy upstairs, and helps you separate your main account from whatever other instances you may want to join.

3 ) find some other instances

witches.town and queer.house are good. as soon as i saw witches.town’s aesthetic, i was like ’ this needs to happen, i will wait, i will do it.’ and now here we are. you have to wait until 8pm france time. just do it pls.

4 ) profit

lots and LOTS of chill, nice, nerdy, gay leftist leaning pple. they will actually talk to you. unlike twitter, where you mention someone and they fucking ignore you lmao. they will also prob follow you. in all the time i’ve been on masto, i’ve seen ONE troll and his account lasted less than 15 minutes. reporting actually works there.

there’s also a TON of help posts out there. you’ll prob see them as soon as you sign up tbh. everyone wants to help. it’s very cute and pure. while the site isn’t as feature heavy as twitter ( you gotta jump through some tiny, tiny hoops to do things. it takes some adjustment ) it’s p nice anyway so. . .

Take the basic idea behind Twitter (rapid-fire conversation/jokes across basically the entire internet) and move it into these separate instances. Each instance works a bit like a room, in that you have a dedicated feed for everybody on that instance, but you can ignore it in favor of just the feed of people you follow like you would on Twitter. Instance owners can decide to permit or deny interaction with other rooms, so if for some reason users on the mastodon.nazis instance get unruly, other instances can just decline to permit users on the mastodon.nazis instance from seeing their posts or interacting with them in any way.

the best part is when you look at any of the reasonably sane instances and they show exactly which instances they have banned, and you can tell just from the url exactly why they are banned

the only jp server that is blocked is pixiv’s server, pawoo.net, because nobody wants to deal with the legal hassles of some of the stuff they carry. which is kind of a shame sinc some very sfw artists i liked were on there.

mstdn.jp and friends.nico are still around. yes that’s absolutely friends as in kemono friends but it’s nico nico douga’s server.

if you are way into Aikatsu!! there’s a server just for you!

music.pawoo.net is an instance where the users control the playlist. so it’s all over the place. (if you click the text to the right of the time, you can choose different playlists! there’s several!)

i do not know about calling it ‘big’ in japan but it has its userbase.

there’s a lot of western mastodon servers with interesting flavor, depending on what you’re looking for.

I don’t really like having a Twitter account and I sometimes don’t look at it for years at a time but I don’t know any other way to keep up with some of the art and indie game dev stuff that I like to see sometimes.

This is me on there. Lately I’ve been posting a few of the same AI-generated images I’ve been sharing in the SB thread and I’ve been meaning to post about some more indie games that I like. But I’ve also already mentioned those here so basically anything I do on Twitter is SB-redundant.
