So what do i need to put on a win10 machine first things first

thanks for moving this thread.

i’m probably going to be helping with setting up a windows 10 machines soon. at the moment my plan is to:

  • reinstall windows to get rid of stuff that comes with the laptop - just lenovo stuff and mcaffee LiveSafe i think … maybe i should not worry about a reinstall?

  • maybe install a small arch linux distribution - but the ssd is only 128GB so maybe i don’t have room for this?

  • install libreoffice and hope it is compatible enough with Word documents that i dont need to buy Microsoft Office. is libreoffice the best free word replacement?

  • explain to the owner of the laptop that windows is going to have to download updates for a day or so before they can use it (i think??)

any answers to those questions, or any other info is greatly appreciated. this is probably the wrong thread.

  • I’d definitely reinstall. The Lenovo stuff is kinda annoying. Might need to replace some drivers too, 'cause mine has some OEM ones that mean I can’t just get updates from Intel and NVidia, and have to get them through Lenovo >:| (I keep meaning to fix that / make sure it’s okay)

Is that SSD all there is? My Arch install is like ~9GB + home directory (depends what’s in there and what’s being shared between OSes) + swap if you need it.

If I understand the situation right though: do you want to be maintaining someone else’s Linux install?

  • Libreoffice is still the one to go for, yeah.

  • Dunno about the last one, but that doesn’t sound right?

holy shit, would never have bought a lenovo if i knew that, thanks for letting me know!

yeah, iirc there’s room to install some kind of additional drive but they don’t need much space, and that was the-thing-that’s-wrong on this computer. thanks for the arch install size, i know it’ll vary but thats helpful.

it feels like it’ll be so much easier than maintaining the windows 10 side of things… just because i don’t understand windows at all, and at least i have a vague idea about linux… or at least arch.

i think mauve was having trouble with updates taking a long time, and i somehow expect the new install to be followed by all the updates since windows 10 was launched… hopefully the updates are included when i reinstall.

Oh right. I kinda forgot how it works when you don’t just install a recent version of an OS yourself. There’ve been some big updates, you’re probably right! Lots of anoying restarting.
