seven samurai
I liked Red Cliff a lot
I think I only saw the 2 hour american version instead of the 4 hour chinese version though
The tactics in Red cliff is definitely amazing nonsense. The 4 hour cut is worth it.
Is this whole series online somewhere?
Maybe? no idea. I watched a torrent of it a million years ago.
my from the hip theory about why rot3k adaptations are always so over the top is because the novel itself is already kind of pulp, refined thru centuries of storytelling to turn a complex historical saga with no real heroes or villains (that is nevertheless already absurdly violent) into a string of crowd-pleasing, bite sized narratives, then simmered and reduced again to condense it into a novel where every chapter ends on a cliff-hanger, then of course the same process is repeated to make it work as a tv serial tasked with the responsibility of finding the middle ground between things that entertain 16th century readers and things that entertain late 20th century tv watchers
the fact that a scene where a man disses another man to death is one result of that process is part of what makes humanity beautiful
The Duellists has awesome and amazing fight scenes, though as the title implies they are in a dueling rather than a military context.
the 94 series is as far as I know the most faithful to the novel of any of the adaptations. Zhuge Liang really did diss Wang Lang to death in the book. (Of course thereās nothing in the actual history to suggest anything like this ever happening)
you would think that the Disgaea anime would focus primarily on tactics or strategy, but you would be wrong
everyone I rewatched Last of the Mohicans last night and it was v. emotional
Mann spends like 4 minutes just lingering on siegeworks letting them sink in
itās not just swooning romance via running through the woods ;___;
but that partās great too
13 Assassins goes full-on guerrilla in the last act
Cutting Words is a pretty crazy spell, huh
I honestly canāt think of a single movie with remotely authentic medieval battlefield combat.
Iām trying The Last Kingdom and during the Fuckinā & Forginā montage the smith pulls the sword from the fire, examines it, places it on the anvil, and finally proceeds to bang his hammer in front of but clearly not on the sword so as to make the anvil ring in painstaking closeup.
Also a closeup on quenching the tang? Come on.
COME ON
itās bad but on the other hand the show is cutting inexplicably between sex and forging a pretty wicked sword, you gotta admit itās still pretty shrugpunk
That partās a straight up homage to the previously mentioned Seven Samurai.
Ken Burnās Civil War with an actually era-appropriate custom soundtrack.
I
I have Some Issues with the sword ;____;
honestly I get pretty distracted with how bad the leadās costume is just all the time
MORE ON TOPIC: if one of these sides just remembered spears existed and deployed them en maase theyād have a real edge in the scenarios presented
In this dark age of the end of enlightenment, you and I shall forge one last resistance: No More Sword Armies
i would also think having some archers on hand would help, but i guess in this show they only function as a firing squad and there are like 10 bows to a kingdom
