i voted ff6 because fuck persona team but also play nocturne
I’ve never played a Persona but FFVI let’s you start flying around in an airship like 3/4 of the way into it and it’s pretty awesome so I would play that.
I couldn’t get far in either JRPG because they didn’t grab me, so… Slay the Spire is really good, you guys.
Wow I guess lots of people hate P4 now!! I remember it being lots of people’s sacred cow on the old forums, but I hated it on release. So I feel like I was way ahead of the curve.
i’m a big time persona liker and like, i think 4 is the worst one
also i can’t justify any of the games lmao
also i still need to play 1 and 2
I really like Persona 4 but always feel like my defense of it is something no one would like or respect.
persona 4 is fucked but i love it anyway. it mostly has almost everything to do with relating to yukiko tho. the scene with her shadowself made me cry and i had to take a few hours to calm down. i know i am honestly ridiculous
final fantasy vi grabbed me so tightly when i first started playing it but around the time i got the airship i think i lost it on the map and didn’t go back to it for years. i have the GBA version and i’d get back to it if i wasn’t already playing like 4 jrpgs right now. i’d also have to start over since my ps3 died and i. . .just don’t feel like it yet.
just do what i do and listen to terra’s theme on youtube whenever you get the urge instead of actually playing because who actually finishes games anymore
edit: i just wanted to add that i love terra for aesthetic reasons but i like celeste more as a character from what i’ve played and i wonder who else feels like this because celeste seems like a pretty slept on character and i don’t really understand why since i haven’t beaten the game yet? i hate spoilers tho so i’ll figure it out eventually.
thinking about how i read many issues of super play frothing for ffvi and then finally got to play it several years later when zsnes became a thing, downloaded from a “YOU MUST DELETE WITHIN 24 HOURS” geocities webring site
i played persona 4 because i liked the mechanics, and i dont regret it! ill probably even replay it sometime in my life
it does SMT stuff without forcing someone to play nocturne (which you should play)
also i related to naoto a lot at the time but have better words for whats going on now
jrpgs are not a genre i play for social commentary anyway. i think people were upset about persona 4 because they told themselves it was progressive at the time, got radicalized, felt embarrassed and denounced it
i feel like if you want to play for mechanics though you might as well just play persona 5. i played it on hard and i enjoyed it
also idk it’s hard to be extra harsh on one persona over the other when they all share similar sins, but also are decent games with anime attempts at being “deep” or what not. while i think 4 is the worst one i played, it’s also like, got it’s charms that i can see doing it for others. it wasn’t enough for me to say i liked it, but i did enjoy it some, i was just more put off by some parts of its writing vs the others
Well, I booted up Persona 4 again and I had absolutely no idea of what I was up to in the game or what I was supposed to do, so I think my decision is made for me.
the jrpg curse!!! enjoy final fantasy six
RPGs really need to figure out a way to help you recalibrate and figure out what you’re doing after picking up a game after a period of time away. And also not go the tacky Persona 5 route and put a punch of objectives on your screen all the time.
Actually, the party talk feature in Dragon Quest is pretty good at this.
I’m about to spill out into an incoherent rant about how games are terrible at not making themselves navigable and that all “quest” systems are basically fucked garbage, but I should probably do something else with my afternoon.
etrian odyssey has a backlog of things said to you which makes it super easy to remember what you did
and i agree, more jrpgs need to do this
why can’t all games have recaps like sonic adventure which start with a character declaring their name
I don’t remember if DQ8 already had this (it had the party talk for sure) but 11 gives you a complete and helpful recap when you load a game. It’s amazing
So FF6 has your bog-standard post-apocalyptic technoarcana steampunk world of mecha suits and spirit gods and a wizard Jokers yawnnn BUT fucking buckle tf up because there is this horny weird-ass giant purple octopus who is present at every major dramatic moment in the game named “Ultros the Ultimate Octopus”
IT GETS BETTER: His best friend is an unimaginably horrific DEMON named MR. CHUPON with a face for an ass and rows of jagged, fucked-up teeth along his bulbous nightmare of a slimer bod. Neither of them understand nor care what the humans are up to throughout the game.
We are thankfully spared ever seeing this abyssal terror ever rendered outside of his native 32 bits as beholding an accurate rendering of his bilious bulk would horrify many doubtless to death
He’s a mount in FFXIV and it is horrific.
