Um…I was scrolling back in this thread and uh…I feel really, really sheepish bringing it up again a week and a half later given everything, but now I’m really curious to see this screenshot…

I don’t really understand why bloom lighting in 2D games is bad…like um, I know this is in 3D but like, look at Lily (@townmap)'s awesome bloom lighting sensibilities (from MookerzZ):

There’s not much difference between Euclidean 2D and 3D geometrically speaking, so I feel like if bloom lighting can look this amazing in 3D, surely it can in 2D as well. Maybe people aren’t doing the most interesting things with it right now or something (I honestly wouldn’t really know I guess because of my migraine problems) but I don’t see how that, like, rules out the technique itself. (I know the earlier conversation was about “pixel art” specifically but isn’t that just a matter of texture resolution essentially? Does that make such a hard line? I feel kind of like a bull in a china shop at this point but like, I feel kind of desperate to say that if you play any game at low enough settings it becomes pixel art)

i think there is a fundamental difference between computing the colour of a pixel and someone deciding what colour it should be.

traditional 2d pixel art games sometimes do have effects which alter the colour of drawn pixels but usually they are working with a limited palette (?)

bloom in 2d might look less offensive to some when everything is procedurally drawn (??)
