There’s something about the mid-90s PC high res low color depth look that I just find really gross. The banding on all the gradients on the bottom image looks terrible, the way the flesh tones cross over into the green and purple makes it feel like something is terribly wrong. It’s weird because I grew up with it but I prefer almost any other arrangement of limitations.

Yeah, 65 thousand colors is the nadir of the uncanny valley. Too many colors to put in a manually curated palette but not enough to look good with photographs or procedurally generated lighting
All the console makers were smart to skip direct from 256 colors to 16 million
