semi-annual Final Fantasy binge/purge

I keep double checking the English VO for these big info dump scenes and the English dub feels like Xavier Renegade Angel and is as confusing. Also doesn’t help because it turns out it is pretty confusing. Strange because as multiple people have said the plot is very straight forward.

Also afraid I’m gonna experience diminishing returns (duh) because it seems like the emotional arc has been covered and now we can just have very long dungeons and battle system/battle system/battle system. I’ve enjoyed it for 20 hours and I frequently complain I don’t think SMT should be 80 hour games resting on just the battle system and this is gonna rest on the battle system until I kill the Space Pope.

Also fought him for the first time. That was a stressful 90 minutes. I’m not bothering with party switching whatever party the game gives me I’m using.

So this here is Gran Pulse huh? The big ole open world folks talked about? It is less an open world and more the game finally made a dungeon rather than a straightline.

The missions are hilariously evil. There just to extend game time. There is one mission. After running down a corridor fighting 4 fights you get the mission and run back down the corridor you just ran, fighting 4 monsters, then a special fight, then run back up the corridor fighting the 4 fights for a third time and continue moving forward.

Locking the warps to the missions and making the missions subsequently unlock is pure evil. That’s stuff you should go to prison or be forced to work on an MMO over.

I went “fuck this” after 7 missions and started booking it for the next plot objective. Either avoiding or barely scraping by any fight I couldn’t avoid. Seeing the unactivated Mission markers.

“My greatest wish was to defeat some big tiger hundreds of years ago. Now I am cursed to hope another like me takes up my cause, and gets 5 stars at it. They’ll get a little title and a reward. Yes that big tiger is still around. Being a L’Cie…totally fucking sucks.”

Pretty funny some staff writer had to figure out how to write that out 65 ways.

I played until 12:30AM and I still am not at whatever the next plot beat was. I was gonna stop at 11:45PM then decided to push my luck because usually there is a save point every 15 minutes but got stuck on one-unpassable fight. Sunk cost policy of running back to save or pushing forward and chose that. I did succeed.

I’ve checked a map and jesus fucking christ this is a long tunnel.

I know that it is not the path to the objective but chapter 11 has many many maps and couldn’t find anyone brave enough to patch them all together.

The greatest lie ever told was that the open world part of FF XIII was the “good part”.

The pnly reason its the good part is that its the only part of the game that lets you really flex the combat system. Otherwise you can sleepwalk through every encounter

Tulpa you’re also a newtype that breezed through Sekiro.

Which is to say I’ve enjoyed the battle system the whole way through but saying “don’t want to do the battle system for no reason for an additional 15 hours?” No I am already playing a video game. That is no reason. I want to see new exciting environments and watch the story not just get into battles endlessly.

I’ve struggled with many battles in this game and yet the solution has been thoughtful decision making and that’s Awesome.

the battle system was the only part of 13 I liked, but only once I got to the open world and I could do stupid things to exploit every subsystem in increasingly busted ways FF8 style

So the first 20 hours for me were an over-extended tutorial and the 10 hours of wandering around an empty grassy field full of random monsters was the real game

I look forward to your take on 13-2

Honestly would love to find these. I feel I can work the system to my advantage but not in an overpowering way. More like my cunning is keeping me from death’s door.

When one of my partners successfully sealed a dragon from attacking and I just got to wale on it for three minutes I had thought “what if this happened every fight.”

The battle system gonna have to really grab me in 13-2 because the thought of playing Sera and her boyfriend that looks like he got kicked out of Tales of Cosplay event sounds real unappealing.

When my friend tried to sell me on the Lightning series, he also just tried to sell the battle gameplay. All I remember is that he said the later games have an even crazier system going on and that it was really good just for the battles?

He never talked about the story though lol

Lightning returns has a totally different combat system and the whole game makes me go sickos with how weird it is

iirc, tri-Ace was drafted in as subcontractor for part deux, and to a lesser extent in pt three, so there is a different tone to these than vanilla ( :smirk: ) XIII.

i’d say 13-2 is the opposite, narrative stuff is surprisingly good (especially the ending), but they concede a lot of ground to the haters with the combat system and kill off what made it work so well in 13.

lightning returns rules

just remembered there’s a finite amount of spawns for each enemy and the last one is always neon pink and drops a Sick Weapon

probably the last final fantasy i really enjoyed

i’ve said before that i think FFXIII is like ATB-Devil May Cry, and i kind of stand by that. i really like the game, like every part of it lol. too bad i stopped playing when i got to the open-world section. i should probably finish the game some day

I’ll def agree that the story was unexpectedly good but I think the combat tweaks weren’t as bad as that (at least I still felt like I could be a total sicko and break the game ff8 style)

Story benefited from being a fantasy wrapper around human concerns (a girl missing her sister) instead of the previous game’s proper noun soup (the fal’cie that control cocoon turned you into a l’cie and you’ll turn into a cie’th if you do not pursue your Focus)

It is really funny they had to write 65 varriations of “500 years ago I couldn’t kill this monster so now I am a statue. That monster is in the next room, kill it and you won’t save me but it would be very chill of you.”
