The first disc of ff8 is probably one of the worst opening acts of a mainline final fantasy. It’s like teflon, nothing to grab onto. I won’t dispute that it gets much better after that, though.

oh I love FFVIII, I’m traditionally the one defending it around here. but I haven’t played it in well over a decade, and I suspect I’d be better off leaving it that way. the game is fantastic spectacle through and through, but I don’t think trying to be involved in it beyond that has much of a payoff. I think that is slightly less true of VII (only slightly!), and for that reason I think my opinion on the relative quality of those two games has swapped over the years (no, I have not played remake).
personally, I never saw much of a difference between cloud and squall. I agree that square were a little more aware of what they were doing with squall and thus presented him as a bit more of a loser with a sense of internality, while any sense of cloud’s internality was deliberately shuffled off on to sephiroth, whatever the fuck zach is, and a general attempt at portraying psychosis – but really they’re the same guy. laguna is the character you’re describing much more than squall is, and the game might work better if he were more of a foil for squall instead of just a better version of him.

though thinking about this some more i fully anticipate them spoiling this in the remakes with some kind of Legendary Chosen Hero explanation for how he inexplicably manages to knock sephiroth into the lifestream sinkhole or whatever the fuck
I don’t think vii has the same “in-on-the-joke”-ness as viii. that’s maybe the only meaningful difference, but it’s a big one to me. they’re going for straight pathos with cloud’s dark amnesiac secrets. you never really feel like the game is poking fun at him in the same way viii nearly constantly does with squall. vii believes in cloud as a straight up badass even after you learn he wasn’t actually a soldier. one reason I love viii so much is because you really see squall grow from a shiftless moody dork to a competent leader. we see him face his own emotional distance and even open up a little. his growth hits all these poignant moments and some of them are uncharacteristically quiet for a final fantasy game. the only other game that kinda goes there is xv.
like I usually kind of stop caring about cloud by the time he falls into the lifestream and you get his lore drop. but squall kind of gets more interesting the more you play the game. but this kind of requires not being put off by him being an insolent jerk for most of disc 1. I think viii’s localization is mostly excellent but I do wonder how the game would land if every time he says “whatever” it was replaced with a more true-to-the-source localization of the original script. but I also love “whatever” as a running gag and it’s kind of hard to imagine a more faithful translation being as fun there.

When my friend told me about final fantasy 6 in high school she described kefka as “being from the era where videogame villains still gave good head” and I didnt know what she meant at first but then I was like oh yeah she’s totally right.

definitely x. xi was the mmorpg, and xii seemed to come out so much later that i didn’t even know anyone who was still playing final fantasy anymore.
the rpg fans i knew had, by the end of the ps2’s life, moved onto either ugly western rpgs, or had gone deeper and deeper into japanese and korean rpgs.
