semi-annual Final Fantasy binge/purge

Yeah in IX you exit the dungeon at the end of Disc 3 and you’re in Disc 4.

IX is paced so weak, it took me forever to get through it and the speed of the ATB and loading times for random encounters makes it even worse. Yes I know the new releases fix some of that but that’s not how most of us played it. A shame because it’s the ultimate Hang Out game, you just want to live in that space and gush over the details in the world. And it’s the last FF that offers a full experience with no compromises.

Seriously tho, who has hypnotized this sap and bullied him into running this website?

Phil here is doing this of his own free will and choice:

The real question is what possessed ars to write an article about a 2 day old website?

If you didn’t stop progressing before the end of the first disc and spend 10 hours playing triple triad instead I don’t want to know you

honestly I think it would be great for every SNES and PS1 jrpg to get the FF7 remake treatment but a) it’s so insanely expensive that it’s hard to imagine them seriously committing to this, b) the argument that these are kind of unnecessary is still true regardless, and c) I would much rather see them do 6 first

I’d only condone that because wouldn’t it be neat if one of these games actually bothered to look like amano art. it’s neat when ps3 game ffxiv sometimes does it with a boss fight. if alan wake ii can look like it does surely we finally have the processing power to make a whole game look like that now

Making a game look sweet isn’t a processing power thing, it’s a development budget thing (unless you happen to have some really good artists who aren’t yet charging what they’re worth).

final fantasy 8 is my favorite in the series. haters lack the emotional intelligence and wisdom to understand it. it’s maybe the best thing squaresoft has ever made.

ugliest looking game I’ve ever seen. pirating that shit day one, should be great.

I think it’s increasingly hard to defend how nonsensical and empty every character is besides laguna and maybe cid, but also as a 40 year old man who inevitably finds teenagers increasingly nonsensical: real.

I will proudly say I’m too stupid to appreciate final fantasy 8

squall is easily the most human final fantasy protagonist. he is a parody of the kind of dramatic angst we feel as teenagers. the writing is so dry that it’s easy to think we’re meant to admire him as this edgy badass like cloud. but the game is in on the joke. quietly, and with compassion, we are invited to laugh at him. the layered narrative with laguna works so well, so much better than the convoluted shit with cloud/zack or any other bizarre plot shenanigans in the series. we get these scenes where squall is watching laguna woo his lover and bemoaning how cringe it all is while we the audience have been watching squall be this dramatic edgelord and bemoaning how cringe he is. it’s amusing dramatic irony while also genuinely poignant. he gets vulnerable in a way that no other protagonist in the series comes close to matching and his character growth is so much more satisfying as a result.

I think it rubbed a lot of people the wrong way because they wanted a protagonist that was just unironically badass like cloud was. but instead the game asks you to have the humility to accept that squall is actually relatable in how embarrassingly human he is. he postures like he’s in-the-know and cool but he’s literally just a kid and doean’t know shit. he is often the dumbest person in the room. but he’s also never painted as overtly naive or clueless. there’s a lot of quiet nuance there that I feel like people miss. like the game is never too obvious about it but everyone in your party is a huge fucking loser, even rinoa. and of course they are! they’re teenagers! it’s so good.

final fantasy vii attempts similar things in broader strokes but trips over the awkward growing pains of its early 3D production values, its often terrible translation, and its confusingly dense, overly self-serious storytelling juxtaposed with inexplicably out-of-nowhere goofy shit. viii is so confident in how it flips the script of vii’s edgy bishounen melodrama. it pokes fun at itself for all that while also taking the drama more seriously and handling it all with clear purpose and vision. even the goofy moments usually compliment the tone instead of compromising it. like it actually has a clear and consistent sense of humor.

it’s good and I will die on this hill!!

Second to “surrounded by friends and family,” dying during an impassioned Final Fantasy Argument is a satisfying way to go.
