it’s like the team behind it loved ff5 but also didn’t really understand why ff5 is good, vaguely remember some kind of objectionable content as well but it has been a long time
all of their games are like this i gather, triangle strategy was like “what if fft sucked”
I mostly remember beating the game and being told I have to beat it four or five more times, though I don’t remember if it actually is that long or if I was just really impatient / unfamiliar with jrpg duration when I played it as a teen.
I remember the promotion for it including a 3DS augmented reality demo of a chibi woman and people posting upskirts from it on NeoGAF 
I don’t know how I just found out about all the rumors of a IX remake but I s2g if they remake IX before VIII I will be very cross!!

What would you want from an FF VIII remake? An action game, full 3D?
Anecdotally I know a lot of people who are familiar with the characters from Kingdom Hearts and haven’t touched it, e.g. know Squall as Leon
I am on Disc 3 on FFIX. The story is now becoming less exciting but I am enjoying myself and look forward to the long-awaited airship and expanded freedom. Zidane and Garnet’s relationship is really uninteresting to me. Vivi’s thing is good, but if nothing else catches my attention as strongly then I expect this game will rank way lower than I thought it would 10 hours ago.
a subplot involving elected leaders shorting Tent futures due to foreknowledge that the Lunatic Pandora’s monsterdemic would overwhelm the healthcare industry, for one
if they actually assassinated the witch president in Disc 2, that’s a potential moment for a FF7R style rewrite
Don’t worry, it will build on the first two discs. I think it is actually paced for the first three discs to have their own complete arc in miniature.
I just want to explore the locales of FF8 in 3D. I don’t even care if there’s a game attached to it. Just let me walk around Balamb Garden or Deling City or Cetra Ruins or whatever.
I enjoyed replaying ffx recently more than I enjoyed the ff7 remake, which was excruciating. which if you time travelled back to inform 16 year old me who had got a ps2 & ff10 for christmas of this development, he probably would of taken that as a sign that I’m past my expiration date and it’s time for the urn
what a great moment and mood it is when you get back to sector 7 in the original ff7 and you reunite with tifa and have the flashback to when you were kids. in the remake going back to sector 7 is some fallout 4 looking sidequest busywork shit and the flashback with tifa is inexplicably during a raid on some new shinra facility where cloud has a panic attack for some reason, there’s also some fight with some guy here that just drags on forever. getting anywhere or doing anything is always some giant tedious chore in the remake, interspersed with psycho ghost nonsense. everything is just worse for no reason, even the music.
They’re more disappointing than anything.
Every game from that team has the same issues: a really facile appeal to nostalgia from trying to emulate late 90s RPGs without retaining the charm, awful writing with overlong cutscenes, predictable gameplay loops with few / no impressive moments. They’re pretty ugly too. They do have pretty OK to great mechanics though which makes me tend to buy them and regret later
I’ve never played a minute of FFVIII but somehow back in the day I wound up reading a lot of fanfic
I dunno about even that. My experience of Bravely Default’s mechanics is that, at least in the early game, I could win every random encounter on the first turn by slamming Brave 4x: the “debt” never comes due because I already won. The titular system seems to be purely designed for bosses but it’s very much not a boss-only RPG

Definitely true, also applies to all of Team Asano’s other games, and thinking about it BD1 is the only one of these to have hot enough job mechanics / boss battles to eventually make up for this IMO
To defend the games a little I’m sure a cool humbling universal experience between BD players is carelessly going full team Bravex4 physical attack on Max Defense Blob and almost losing the entire team in the next 4 turns
I just want to note that relationships in FF games are awful without exception. only tifa/cloud works even a little bit, mostly because it doesn’t actually work and they’re willing to sort of admit it. I guess kain pining for rosa from the sidelines is kinda angsty cute
I feel that way from what I’ve played, but I guess I meant relationship in a general sense. Like, Garnet and Zidane seemed to be developing into a buddy dynamic that wasn’t romantic, which saw Garnet becoming independent and Zidane becoming more chill around her (and women in general, I suppose). That’s how it seemed to me for a while, but it just became a romance that I think comes out of nowhere.
